In our lives, there are more reasons to wear a carnival costume than it seems. Not only Halloween parties allow such an appearance. Themed evenings are gaining more and more popularity, where people dress up in the costumes of their favorite movie characters and pretend to be them. The black mantle can become a necessary accessory not only for a person posing as a hero from films and books about Harry Potter, but also for an illusionist magician and even a superhero. Batman, the Black Cloak and many other characters also wear mysterious black robes on the floor. So how do you create such an accessory with your own hands? This is actually not so difficult.
How to make a black mantle?
For work you will need a black fabric of sufficient size. To know its length, you need to measure the height of the person for whom such a mantle is sewn, without taking into account the head. From the resulting length, you need to remove a couple of centimeters from the bottom so that the cloak does not lie on the floor. You don’t need to cut too much, because part of the fabric will go into the back and make a compartment for ties. You can also make the mantle to the floor. To do this, take 30-35 centimeters more fabric.
For the simplest option, you need to cut a rectangle of their fabric. If you want the mantle to look more elegant, it is better to make a blank in the shape of a trapezoid, where its narrow upper side is equal to the width of the shoulders and the lower side is 20-25 cm larger.
In addition to the fabric for the mantle, you will need another lace or ribbon of the corresponding color for the ties. With the help of this design, the mantle will be held on its shoulders, not trying to fall or move.
The blank cut from the fabric needs to be stitched on three sides. To do this, turn the fabric two turns inward and sew it manually or on a sewing machine. After that, you need to make a compartment for ties. To do this, we also twist the fabric of the remaining side twice, but now the first revolution should be very small, and the second one is five millimeters more than the width of the ribbon or lace that you will use as ties.
The last side must be stitched strictly along the edge that is closer to the center of the mantle. In this case, you will get a “tunnel” along the entire cloak, into which you will extend the tie. To deal with the last point faster and easier, you can fasten the tape with a pin, with which you can drag it through the "tunnel". If there is no pin, then a knitting needle, hook or any other thin and fairly long object will do.
Black mantle with a hood. Second level of difficulty
If, for greater credibility, you want to make a hood, then 2 blanks of the form shown in the drawing need to be cut from black fabric.
When cutting it, you need to leave a couple of centimeters at the seams. Then the workpieces are sewn along the cut and long side. Edges are treated in the same way as on the mantle. When the design is ready, it is sewn to the neck. So you get a black mantle with a hood.
What material to buy?
The black gown should look mystical and even a little scary. Therefore, it is best to take satin or velvet fabric. It’s more difficult to work with them, but the result will pleasantly surprise you. If there is no time to search and select fabric, then it is better to take any medium-density fabric. You can choose textiles with some beautiful shimmer or cold silver shine. This will give the mantle a particularly beautiful appearance.
