At the marinas are crowds of ships. Neva is tamed and dressed in granite. The poet loves all this splendor. He also likes brief transparent summer nights when you do not need to light a candle. He likes frost in winter, when sleds rush, and girls' faces sparkle “brighter than roses”. The poet is fond of the noise of balls and friendly feasts, drill exercises in the military capital. Small man
Eugene, which means “noble” in Greek, is quiet and well-disposed. He does not think about the past greatness of his ancestors, he lives in the present day.
His day is simple and uncomplicated - he serves and lives on the outskirts, in Kolomna. On a rainy autumn evening, he returned from his guests home. It was already dark and late. Our hero undressed and lay down, but could not sleep for a long time. He was overcome by thoughts of later life. He dreamed of living with his beloved wife (Parash was a girl), slowly moving forward in the service, getting recognition for hard work recognition in the form of honor and independence. He asked God to add to his mind and money (a completely natural dream of a poor man who does not have support). Eugene also thought about the raging weather, and that the bridges would be removed, and he would not see his beloved for two or three days. This made him very upset. Finally, he fell asleep, and when he woke up, he saw with what evil roar the river carries its waters back from the sea to the city. So in confusion, Eugene and the elements met - the main characters of The Bronze Horseman. Angry waters rushed into the city, destroying everything around.
Everything perishes - food, shelter, cemeteries. Not only boats and fragments of houses, but also coffins float through the streets. Alexander, who then ruled Russia, looked sadly at the chaos and destruction and with a sigh expressed the idea that “tsars cannot be controlled by God's element”. How our hero ended up in Palace Square, he does not remember himself. Only we already see him sitting on a marble lion, terribly pale and motionless. The wind tore off his hat, the rain whipped into his face. Around - water and nothing more.
And where is that dilapidated house by the bay that with Parasha, his dream? There is nothing. Everything is an empty dream. Eugene lost all strength, sits and can not get off the marble. But suddenly he sees how, above, his back is turned to him, the horseman stands unshakable on a bronze horse. For the first time, the main characters of Pushkin’s Bronze Horseman meet - the unfortunate Eugene and the horseman. The water began to descend, and our hero quickly found the boat and went to the coveted house. But what did he find? No gate, no home - nothing left. Eugene lost his mind.

And already in the morning the people, as if nothing had happened, as if he had not met with a terrible flood, were in a hurry for business. Someone went to the service, someone opened their shops. Everything went as usual.
Eugene's life
Having lost everything that was dear to the heart and soul of a madman, he wanders, beggar, for a whole year. Here again autumn comes, and poor Eugene is near the marble lions. Then he remembered the tragedy that entered his life. And who is to blame? On Palace Square, he rebelled. He went around the monument and looked into his face. Here is this powerful sovereign who, like a horse, reared Russia. Face to face were the protagonists of The Bronze Horseman. And why is such power hidden in it, why did he establish a city over the sea, why? Eugene is trying to comprehend what is the historical reason for his misfortune. The poet sympathizes with "poor Eugene." He understands the threats thrown by Eugene to the rider.
Suddenly it seems to the madman that the rider came down from the pedestal and galloped after him. All night he ran away from the formidable king, who pursued him with a raised hand. All night Eugene heard heavy tramp behind him. The death of the marginal was sad and regular, as the young promising nobleman became. He quietly died near a deserted, dilapidated and beloved house, when he found him, and he was buried.
