November 1922 went down in history as a significant day of the discovery of one of the great Egyptian secrets. On November 30, the world press intrigued with headlines: βThe search was successful ...β, βEgyptian treasureβ. It was reported that the greatest discovery of the century was made by Lord Carnarvon and Mr. Carter - the tomb of Tutankhamun, the Egyptian heretic king, was found.
Lord Carnarvon had long been in love with Egypt and had deeply studied the history of
ancient civilization. In 1916, with the support of the famous explorer Howard Carter, he began work on the search for the tomb of the pharaoh, which lasted for six years. A group of scientists faced an almost impossible task. The Valley of the Kings has long been dug, and the tombs of other Egyptian kings are looted. The tomb of Tutankhamun was found in the last winter of excavation under the site where builders' huts were once located.
The reign of the young Egyptian king was not marked by significant coups. He ascended the throne after the mysterious death of Amenhotep IV - the pharaoh who rejected the cult of the god Amon-Ra and proclaimed himself the sole sovereign of Egypt. The reign of Amenhotep IV left devastation behind, Egypt was almost destroyed. After the death of a madman, his body was torn to pieces and thrown away.
9-year-old Tutankhamun comes to power in this difficult period and tries to restore the former greatness of the state and gain the mercy of the gods. Despite the fact that the young pharaoh predicted a great future, Tutankhamun dies at the age of 18, and he is buried in a hastily built modest tomb, which was found after three millennia.
The tomb of Tutankhamun is a revived legend, its discovery is the greatest day for Egyptologists and scientists who previously could not touch the history of the burial of the pharaohs. It was only in 1922 that exciting facts were received that became direct evidence of the luxury of the burial of the rulers of an ancient civilization.
Going down the stairs to the dungeon, the expedition found on its way walled up entrances with traces of ancient seals, the last of which was the door to the legendary tomb.
The tomb of Tutankhamun, a photo of which was subsequently presented to the press, was a crypt clogged with gilded chariots, statues of kings, chests and chests. The jewels that were found in the tomb were disassembled for five years - their quantity was so great.
In one of the tomb's rooms a sarcophagus with three gilded coffins was found, the last of which contained the mummy of Tutankhamun, a golden mask of amazing work covered his face. Judging by the contours, the young pharaoh was captivating and beautiful. Of course, the mummy, like other artifacts of the tomb, was strewn with gold jewelry. However, among the treasures, the most touching was the bouquet of wilted flowers, apparently left by the young wife of the pharaoh. Scientists argue that since Tutankhamun was buried in such luxury, one can only imagine what wealth the tombs of other kings kept in themselves.
The tomb of Tutankhamun, however, bore the traces of the presence of robbers. The thieves probably visited the tomb shortly after the burial, but for unknown reasons they took a little and never returned. The entrance to the crypt was blocked over time, and after that it was completely forgotten.
Any discovery always has a mysterious train. The curse of the tomb of Tutankhamun is a mystery that strikes the imagination of even contemporaries. After opening the tombs in a short time, about 20 members of the expedition died under strange circumstances. Lord Carnarvon died in 1923 from a mosquito bite. The press widely covered all the unusual deaths that overtook many scientists and visitors to the tomb. It is believed that by 1930 only Howard Carter remained the only living among those members of the group who were directly involved in the excavations.
Secrets have always attracted humanity. And how many of them are still hidden and not revealed to the world. Perhaps riddles are revealed to people when their time comes.
