Putty for windows is a very important component when glazing wooden frames. If it is poorly applied or completely absent, then it is not worth talking about any good thermal insulation. In addition, glass loose in the frame will rattle each time the window is opened or closed.
How to make putty for windows
Recipe number 1
For the manufacture you will need a sediment from oil and white or decorative finely ground cement. If you use a dry building mixture with large granules, then the future putty for windows will be of poor quality. Both ingredients must be mixed and beat thoroughly until the consistency of thick sour cream.
Recipe number 2
A very easy way. Chalk and flour should be mixed in a 1: 1 ratio. In the resulting dry mixture, add water at room temperature and mix everything thoroughly. The result should be a creamy consistency.
Recipe number 3
Putty for windows obtained by this method is durable. It is necessary to mix ground chalk and drying oil in a ratio of 8 to 3.
Recipe number 4
This method allows you to get a putty reusable. To make it, you need to mix rosin, melted lard and chalk in proportions of 2: 1: 10, respectively. Such putty can be removed from the frame using hot water, after which it is suitable for reuse.

To begin with, ordinary chalk must be crushed to a powder state. Then it should be mixed with linseed oil in a ratio of 4 to 1. The resulting mixture will have a yellowish color. If putty is required for white windows, then use refined linseed oil.

Another easy way to make putty. But, unfortunately, it is suitable only for the winter period, since in summer it will become sour under the influence of moisture. Its good to use as a temporary solution. It is made from crushed chalk and sour cream. After mixing the ingredients, putty should be thoroughly kneaded.

This method allows to obtain a particularly durable putty. When using it, it is easier to break the glass than wait for it to fall out of the frame. To make it, tar is required, which must first be cooked for at least two hours on low heat. Then it should be mixed with seeded ash and knead until the putty ceases to stick to the hands. Then it should be used as intended until it has hardened.
Removing old putty
To perform this operation, a metal narrow spatula is required. To simplify the work, the old putty can be heated with a conventional household hair dryer. Then it will soften and be easier to process. The spatula blade should be inserted into the gap between the putty and the glass, after which a slight movement in its direction to remove part of the material. If in some areas it is not possible to perform this operation with a spatula, then you can use the chisel. After the glass has been removed, the frame can be finally cleaned with sandpaper.
How to put putty on windows with your own hands
This work should begin with thorough mixing of the material. Using a spatula, putty should be applied to the gap in the window frame. Next, insert the window. Use your finger to press the putty firmly into the slots around the entire perimeter of the frame from the inside and outside. After this operation is completed, put more putties on top with a spatula and let it dry for several days.
