Today, due to the availability and variety of building materials, door sizes, composition and quality are very different. This is a positive fact, since a person has the opportunity to realize his design fantasies. But the dimensions of the openings and doors of any shape still have a certain standardization.
Many people make repairs themselves, without resorting to the help of construction companies. This is done out of economy or for your own pleasure and confidence in a quality result. Do-it-yourself door frame installation is quite possible. Almost everyone can do it. But when laying the doorway, it is necessary to take into account the standard size of the structure that a person has chosen for himself.
If the owner, for his own confidence, wants to make his own door frame for the interior doorway, for example, to provide increased security for his home, or if the door is non-standard, then all the opportunities for this now exist.
Dimensions
The buyer can choose any size of the door that he likes and is more suitable for his home. As noted above, the range of such products is extensive. And yet there are certain standards for their width. Moreover, in different countries these standards differ from each other. In Russia, they are similar to Spain and Italy. In these countries, you can find in stores designs with a width of 600 mm, 700 mm, 800 mm, 900 mm. But if you compare with France, then the dimensions of the doorways will be different (width - from 690 mm to 890 mm).
It is advisable to choose Russian standards. Firstly, there is more choice, and secondly, if the door does not meet any building standards, then it will have to be replaced with a similar one or altered the doorway to a standard one. This is already a more laborious process.
In our country, the width of the door frame is in accordance with GOST. Depending on the purpose of the room, certain dimensions also change, for example:
- The width of the door frame in the kitchen according to GOST should exceed 70 cm and a height of 2 m.

What is a door frame?
This is the basis of the door itself. It is very tightly mounted in the doorway. Unlike the door itself, the frame is completely motionless. In appearance, it is something like a frame on which hinges and canvas are attached. The material for the frame is chosen, taking into account your taste and financial capabilities. The frame can be plastic, metal, wooden, steel or from pressed wooden sawdust. The form of construction depends on the door itself. Basically it is a rectangle or an arch. With the help of modern materials, a similar structural element can also perform decorative functions.
The frame box consists of several parts: frame, platband, nut, seal. The first part is usually U-shaped and has a recess. The latter is needed in order for the door leaf to enter the structure. The platband closes the gap that forms between the wall and the door frame. A similar element gives an aesthetic look. The skid completes the construction. Do not forget about the sealant - it will provide you with insulation.
What is important for the reliability and functionality of the frame:
- The most even bars of which the frame is made. Deviations are acceptable, but minimal (2-3 mm).
- Strong material for a frame and a nut.
- The height of the sills is about 2-3 cm. In the kitchen they are optional.
- The width of the platband is selected depending on the width of the gap between the frame and the doorway.

Assembly
What do you need to assemble the door frame yourself? The first thing to do is to acquire a profile. If you decide to make the frame wooden, then finding a standard wooden profile is not difficult. Usually they push her under the door. But if a person decides to make a custom design in order to maximize the use of the area of the doorway, then they are guided by the dimensions of the opening.
Before cutting the profile, it is necessary to measure all sides of the opening, its width and height. For normal operation, a mounting foam is required, which fills the gap between the frame and the opening. In this case, it is necessary that the distance between them is at least 1.5 cm. Therefore, in the manufacture of the upper crossbar, 3 cm is taken away from the opening width. For side profiles, 1.5 cm is taken from the opening height. The corresponding parts of two vertical and one are cut with the help of a miter box horizontal bar at an angle of 45 degrees. How is the installation of interior door frames further performed?
A drill must be made one through hole in the vertical bars perpendicular to the plane of the cut. Lubricate the sections with wood glue. Next, connect the vertical bars and the crossbar along these sections and fix them together using clamps. Secure the connection with screws.
If you decide to connect the frame parts using a dowel, then the hole for it is drilled before applying glue immediately in both surfaces to be connected. What next?
When everything is finally assembled, it's time to start installing the door frame. If there is a nut, dismantle it. Fasten the bar in its place. The wooden plank should be no thicker than 2 cm. Fasten the nut, but be careful with its length. This indicator should match the width of the doorway. Next, drill holes in the bars of the frame under the screws with which you will fasten the frame to the wall. Usually in vertical bars three holes are made at an equal distance from each other, and in horizontal - two.
Insert the frame into the opening. Carefully level it with a plumb line and level. Make holes in the wall through the holes in the frame. Remove the frame. Using a hammer drill, drill holes under the dowels at these marks. Screws fix the frame in place. In no case do we tighten them. Remember that between the frame and the opening there must be a gap of 1.5 cm. It will give us the opportunity to adjust and align the position of the frame. In order for the mounting foam not to shift the position of the frame, all the screws in the mount must be tightened tightly. But do not bend the bars, pulling them to the wall.
Hidden door frame
Concealed mounting is slightly different from the foam mounting that is often used. Anchors or screws are already used here. Mounting holes are not made on the bars, and fasteners are usually hidden in loops. There are only three fixation points.
Having fixed the door frame, install spacers. The gaps are filled with mounting foam. To prevent the frame from deforming, the struts are held until the foam hardens completely. This installation option requires accuracy in calculations and scrupulousness in actions. With any inaccuracies, adjusting anything will no longer be possible. We'll have to do everything anew, having dismantled and reinstalled the interior door frames. But still, this method has advantages. Hidden fastening is quite rigid and makes it possible to maintain the appearance of the structure.
Suspensions
Another option is to attach the door frames to metal suspensions. For this, parts for a suspended ceiling are taken. The plates themselves are screwed to the door frame. Having inserted into an aperture, they must be regulated with the help of a level. Marks are made to fix the plate in the right places. After that, in order to hide the fasteners, indentations are made in the future.
What is add?
This is a certain bar. It comes in different thicknesses, sizes and textures. It is required when the wall thickness is less than the door frame. Planks can be installed both on both sides, and on one. They can be used for older designs. They not only strengthen it, but can also be used to mask any defects on the slopes (including as an independent decorative tool). The main thing is to choose the texture of the extension to match the canvas or walls.
Finish
When the box is fully installed, you can proceed to the final stage. How is finishing done after installing the door frame with my own hands? It is necessary to perform some installation and cosmetic work.
All gaps between the frame and the wall are filled with foam. Remember that it expands many times and will soon climb out of all the cracks. But do not save much. The quality of this work directly depends on how long the design will last. It will be nice to protect the floor and walls from excess foam with a film fixed to adhesive tape. After waiting for the foam to dry completely, you can cut off the excess with the help of an office knife.
Then you need to clean those surfaces on which the foam should not be. Only after that we proceed to the platbands. Having measured the three planks by laying them on the horizontal and vertical beams of the door frame, we cut them off with the help of a miter box at an angle of 45 degrees. All cutting angles should coincide with each other without gaps, as a whole. Using screws, we fasten them to the frame, sinking them as deep as possible into the casing.
At this stage, gaps may again form, and not only between the piers and the door frame. There is no point in worrying - it’s easy to fix. To do this, purchase a special putty on wood. Apply it to the gaps, and then smooth the mixture. Wait until it is completely dry and sand the surface. After that, install the hinges for the door leaf.
To do this, use the chisel and make recesses for them in those places where necessary. Take screws and a screwdriver to fasten the parts.
