The Tsimlyansk Sea, as the locals proudly call the reservoir, was artificially created in 1952, during the construction of the hydroelectric power station. Even before filling it with water, there was a lot of controversy over the fact that historical monuments fell in the flood zone, such as the Sarkel fortress, which in the old days belonged to the Khazars, and several Cossack villages and hamlets, which were historically associated with Pugachev and Razin.
In addition to historians, biologists were worried, and, apparently, not in vain: after the creation of the reservoir, the hydrological background of the Sea of Azov sharply worsened.
The territory occupied by the Tsimlyansk reservoir contains well-known reserves and reserves, the largest of which are Rostov and Tsimlyansky. The employees of these reserves are actively involved in environmental and scientific activities. Large-scale work is underway to protect soils, and the state of rare flora and fauna is being studied. It is safe to say that the Tsimlyansk reservoir is not only a powerful symbol of human capabilities, but also an example of a rash and hasty decision that has negative consequences for nature.
