Coffin sizes: types, standards, table and diagrams

The death of a loved one is a very terrible event, which, unfortunately, can happen to everyone. It is impossible to prepare for it; it always catches by surprise. But in any case, one who has gone to another world needs to be given the last honors by contacting the funeral services agency and acquiring everything necessary. We offer you to get acquainted with the standard dimensions of the coffin and find out how to choose it correctly.

What it is

A coffin is a special sarcophagus, most often made of wood and upholstered with fabric, in which it is customary to bury the dead. Initially, the grave itself was called by this word, but gradually the semantics narrowed. Before considering what sizes of the coffin exist, we briefly learn the main parameters:

  • The shape is not quite rectangular, it expands at the head and is narrowed to the legs.
  • Must have a cover.
  • For the manufacture of wood used: coniferous wood (spruce, larch, pine). Lacquered models are made of walnut, cedar and beech. The price of the product depends on the material used, coffins made of needles are considered the most budgetary, expensive ones are made of cedar and beech.

For upholstery, fabric of various colors can be used, most often it is red and blue, however, black and white upholstery is also found. And the most expensive models can be decorated with bas-reliefs or a colonnade.

Consider how to determine the size of the coffin, if a sad event still occurred. The following information is required:

  • The growth of the deceased.
  • The size.

Next, a simple calculation is made. 15-20 cm is added to the growth. The resulting amount is rounded to tens, since the size of the coffin should be a multiple of 10.

In addition, there is a special formula for a more accurate calculation:

((Height + 10 cm) + (height + 20 cm)) / 2.

We give an example. Suppose the body length of the deceased was 180 cm.

The size of the coffin is determined as follows:

((180 + 10) + (180 + 20)) / 2 = 195 cm. It is necessary to round the number to tens, it turns out 200 cm.

It should be noted that the parameters of the coffin can be measured in different ways:

  • At the bottom, where the product is already shorter.
  • On the upper part, there the coffin is wider and longer.

Information about which parameter is used during measurements should be clarified in advance with the employees of the ritual agency in order not to encounter a discrepancy.

size table

For the convenience of both the employees of the funeral services and ordinary people faced with tragic situations, all the coffins are divided into 4 groups depending on the size of the deceased. These are the following types:

  • Standard (up to 50th size).
  • "Deck" (52-56th sizes).
  • "Special Deck" (56-62th sizes).
  • Domovina (64th size and above). Most often it is made individually according to the size of the customer.

In the following table you can see more detailed information about all sizes.

In addition, if it is planned to put any of the deceased’s things in the coffin (such a tradition is very strong in certain localities), the ritual services should be notified in advance, even before the size is approved.

We examined the standard dimensions of the coffins, however, in some cases, the last refuge is made by individual standards, according to the special requirements of customers. For example, the Domovina models do not have any parameters, since they are always made to order, taking into account the growth and size of the deceased.
