Each country is proud of its writers. The same can be said about Great Britain - many famous personalities grew up there, learned new things for themselves, brought up moral values. One of the outstanding English writers can be considered Hughes Richard. What kind of person is this? How was he able to write books recognized around the world? How do they differ from other works like Richard's adventure stories? What is so interesting that Bernard Shaw found in his works?
All people come from childhood
A boy was born on April 19, in 1900. His homeland was Weybridge, Surrey. Sister, brother and father die very early. Many sources talk about the childhood of the British writer that he was educated at Charterhouse. This is a very respected and privileged school, which tried to instill in its pupils not only knowledge, but also life goals, spiritual values, and honor. This was very good for her, based on what the children studying there were becoming. Hughes had a penchant for writing poems and already at school tried his hand at poetry. The first attempts were not considered ingenious among peers, but nobody suited the boy for persecution - he wants, let him write.
Growing up, the young man did not abandon the poem, but the preparation of the whole world for the First World War influenced him. Following recruiting speeches about joining the army, Hughes became a volunteer. During the time that the bloody war lasted, the soldier managed to visit almost all countries of Europe and even traveled to the Middle East, Central and North America. So, the war helped the young man to see the world, which then affected his work.
The founder of radio shows
After years of fighting, Hughes Richard entered Oxford University, where he studied famous personalities of that time: Robert Graves, T.E. Lawrence and others. Higher education instilled in the young man the ability to get out of difficult situations, and as a student he learned how to earn money without having a complete education. After university, Hughes got a job on the radio, where he published his poems. However, he was not only interested in poetry: he saw many cultures and nationalities, he had something to say to the world in prose.
There was another specialty that the British writer tried: journalism. He writes post-war notes that were so in demand at that time. In 1923, the opportunity to make a play was taken up, and already in 1924 it was heard on the Air Force radio station. This was the first performance to be played on the radio in Europe!
Honored Work Awards
Thanks to his unusual writing style, his enormous ability to work, and his ability to achieve his goal, he is noticed by many literature connoisseurs, and in 1936, Hughes Richard became vice president at the Welsh National Theater. After 10 years, in 1946, already in adulthood, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire. These titles, if they serve as the temptation to relax, stopping at what has been achieved, then Hughes does not succumb to him.
In addition, the biography of Hughes Richard is replete with other awards: the mere fact that he was considered an honorary member of the US National Institute, as well as the American Academy, already indicated that he was recognized as an author among literary critics of the first half of the 20th century. Both the academy and the institute specialized in art, and in literature, each institution separately put its emphasis. Hughes was later admitted to an even more respected estate - the Royal Literary Society.
World of books
How were things in the literary plan? Between the First and Second World Wars, the writer released four collections: two with poems, and two with stories. They were dominated by drama, philosophical notes and the influence of the amazing writer Bernard Shaw. Later, angularity is smoothed out, and in 1929 the world sees an adventure book, Hurricane over Jamaica. The success was so great that after it the author becomes quite famous. The next success came after the publication "In Danger" in 1938. It spoke of the life of sailors: their dreams, goals, difficult everyday lives and a few pleasures.
Then comes a 20-year “pause”. During this time, Hughes did not write anything, but after it the author feels the strength to describe the historical events before the war, the First, Second World War itself, the gap between them in tetralogy. By chance, only two books were included in the Human Destiny: The Fox in the Attic (1961) and The Wooden Cowgirl (1973). The writer dies without completing the tetralogy in half.
Hughes Richard - Hurricane Over Jamaica
At the very beginning, a hurricane really sweeps over Jamaica, which separates two families: parents send seven children on a ship. Very quickly they are captured by pirates. However, the bandits can hardly be called such - there are no weapons, they are only hunted with petty robbery, their hands have never been bloodied. And then one of the girls kills the captain of the Norwegian ship. Pirates are horrified by the act of the child.
Every line, every new thought in the plot is saturated with philosophy. Adults can understand it, but this book about adventures is recognized as youthful literature. The plot is exciting, but the original does not compare with the translations.
Confession
Although the play “The Tragedy of the Sisters” is not so well known, it was he who won the praise of Bernard Shaw. In addition, in 1965, the film Hurricane Over Jamaica was released, where the author’s idea is well displayed. The novel itself is recognized as one of the best adventure works written in the 20th century.
Thus, the life of Hughes Richard is not very full of colorful events, but creativity is outstanding. The fact that only four novels that came out of the hands of the writer conquered the world suggests that quantity does not replace quality.
