The Russian Navy is the heir to the Soviet Navy, which, in turn, was the successor to the imperial fleet. Today, the main functions of the Russian Navy are: deterring the enemy, protecting the sovereignty of the country, ensuring the safety of economic activities at sea, as well as ensuring the presence of Russia in the oceans far beyond territorial waters. In addition, the navy takes part in peacekeeping, humanitarian and rescue operations outside the country.
Naval Forces
Structural units of the Russian Navy: Baltic Fleet, Northern Fleet, Black Sea, Pacific and Caspian Flotilla. Each group has a main base on which the parking and repair of naval military vessels is carried out. The largest naval bases are in Severomorsk, Sevastopol, Vladivostok.
The main city of the Caspian flotilla is Astrakhan, but the flotilla is part of the Southern Military District and is subordinate to the strategic command "South".
At the same time, the operational-strategic association of the Russian Navy in the Baltic Sea is based in Kaliningrad, although many mistakenly believe that St. Petersburg is the main base in the Baltic.

The main purpose of the Baltic Fleet is to ensure the security of Russian interests in the Baltic Sea region. The fleet is a grouping of troops, which includes both surface and submarine forces. In addition, there is an aviation division and air defense forces, as well as coastal troops and units providing material and technical maintenance of the fleet. Due to the strategic importance of the region, all parts of the fleet are considered to be parts of constant combat readiness; therefore, they can fulfill their tasks in the shortest possible time.
The main naval base of the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Navy is Kaliningrad. The states and fleet controls are located there, and the destroyer "Persistent" is considered the flagship.
Fleet history
Like other parts of the Russian Navy, the Baltic Fleet begins its history with the imperial fleet. It is believed that the prototype of the Baltic Fleet was the flotilla of Peter the Great, which consisted of 30 boats, on which soldiers of the Preobrazhensky and Semenovsky regiment served.
The Day of the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Navy is celebrated on May 18, as it was on this day that the Petrovsky Flotilla defeated two Swedish warships. All participants of that momentous battle received special medals with the inscriptions "Unprecedented happens."
However, after that victory it became obvious that the small boats of the great northern neighbor with its developed fleet could not be defeated. In the end, in order to defeat the two warships of Sweden, as many as 30 Russian boats were needed. Then the question arose of building a new fleet.
Oddly enough, the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Navy was born on the Vorona River, on the banks of which the city of Voronezh stands. It was in this city of modern central Russia that all the main technologies were tested, which later began to be applied at the Petrozavodsk and Admiralty shipyards.
Scientific and research activities
Although the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Navy took part in almost all military campaigns of the XVll-XlX centuries, including in the Turkish Wars and, of course, in the war against Sweden, its activity was not limited only to military campaigns.
One of the most important missions of the Baltic Fleet was conducting research activities. It was the Baltic ships and their commanders who became the discoverers of Antarctica, and also made the first trip around the world.
In addition, on the shoulders of the Baltic sailors lay responsibility for the livelihoods of the Russian colonies in America. Without the courage and experience of such sailors as Bering, Essen and Ushakov it is impossible to imagine the military and scientific history of Russia.
Combat structure
May 18 - Day of the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Navy. From the very first days of its existence, it served as a training ground at which engineers and designers developed skills and tried new, often very bold, technologies. Current state
Today, the entire Russian Navy and the Baltic Fleet in particular are under the scrutiny of the country's top leadership, which ensures that the state’s naval forces are always in maximum combat readiness and have the most modern equipment.
Despite the fact that the 90s turned out to be extremely difficult for the Russian fleet, in the beginning of 2000 the situation changed for the better, and several new powerful ships equipped with modern Russian-made equipment were put on combat alert, which indicates the preservation of a high-class shipbuilding school in Of Russia.
