Rocks - this is perhaps one of the most beautiful creations of Mother Nature. They are found everywhere on the globe: they hang over river valleys, stick out from sea waters, look out intricately from snowfields and glaciers of the Antarctic. In this article you will find photos of the most picturesque rocks of our planet.
What is a rock? Types of rocks
By rock is meant a geological formation, a landform formed as a result of erosion and weathering of hard rocks. According to a simpler, unscientific definition, a rock is a stone block with steep, often steep, slopes and numerous sharp ledges, practically devoid of any vegetation.
Rocks are most often found in mountainous areas, on sea coasts, and also in river valleys. Depending on which rock they were formed from, several of their types are distinguished:
- limestone;
- Cretaceous
- sandstone;
- dolomite;
- granite;
- basaltic.
A synonymous concept for the word "rock" is exposure. This is a geological term for access to the earth's surface of indigenous rocks. Outcrops can often be found on the slopes of river valleys, as well as in man-made quarries.
The most beautiful rocks of the planet: photo and location
On the surface of our planet there are many magnificent and original rock formations. Some of them are truly breathtaking!
So, the most recognizable in the world is the rock of Koh Tapu in Thailand. Its height is 20 meters. Sea water has turned a soft βlegβ of limestone rock, giving it a bizarre shape.
The coastal cliffs of the Twelve Apostles adorning the coast of Port Campbell National Park in Australia are no less famous. They look incredibly picturesque during a sunny sunset. It is curious that the rocks here are not twelve, but only eight.
But the record holder for the originality of its outlines is the Dan Bristy rock in Ireland. It is located at a distance of 80 m from the coast and has a height of 50 m. The walls of the rock were chosen by birds, which build thousands of nests here.
The largest cliff in the world is the eastern slope of the Trango Tower. This peak belongs to the Karakorum mountain system and is located in Pakistan. The height of the rocky peak reaches 1340 meters.
