History of the city
The history of the city has more than 25 centuries. The ancient Greeks from the city of Miletus founded the first settlement on this site, giving it the name Kerkinitida. Due to the constant invasions of the Scythian tribes, it was decided to apply for protection to the Pontic king named Mithridates VI Eupator, in whose honor the fortress Eupator was built on the territory of the North-Western Crimea (translation of this word means “born noble”). The Greco-Scythian settlement Kara-Tobe is located in an accessible place, not far from the city of Yevpatoriya, where everyone can go. It is located at: Evpatoria highway, 2a.
In the XV century. a Turkish fortress was built on the site of Kerkinitida, and the settlement was renamed Gozlev - according to one version, this word meant “the house of a hundred eyes”, because the lights that were visible from the shore were lit in the houses. But Russified and turned into "Kozlov" the name of the city seemed inconsistent with Catherine II, and in 1784 Gozlev was renamed Evpatoria. 25 km from Yevpatoriya is the village of Mirny, next to which is the Yuzhnaya Spit with endless clean beaches and beautiful bays.
