Ultrasonic liquid level sensor: operating principle, tasks performed, advantages and disadvantages

An ultrasonic liquid level sensor is a device that measures the level of water or any other liquid substance. In his work, he uses the return signal method. The unit sends and receives pulses, being at the top of the tank parallel to the surface of the liquid. At the same time, the signal transit time is measured. All necessary parameters are calculated based on the received data.

Distinctive features

An ultrasonic liquid level sensor makes it possible to monitor the state of huge tanks in production. It helps to determine the amount of sewage and wastewater from a distance. If any liquid reaches the maximum level or an emergency occurs, the device switches on the indicator. In this case, notifications of a problem or violation are sent via SMS, GSM and GPS.

Main destination

Ultrasonic liquid level sensors in the tank are often used as they are the latest intelligent instruments with many functions. They measure the filling of the tank with liquid and use them as a flow meter. These devices perform fluid control in contaminated, aggressive and corrosive environments. They are used in:

  • chemical industry;
  • water treatment systems;
  • pharmaceutical industry;
  • Food Industry.

Tasks Performed

An ultrasonic water level sensor is capable of solving a huge number of tasks, such as:

  • simultaneous monitoring of the state of a large arsenal of tanks in production - gutters and silos;
  • continuous monitoring of the level of liquid, adhesive, viscous and abrasive products, corrosive, aggressive and contaminated media;
  • remote monitoring of vats, tanks and diesel tanks;
  • performance of work in the field of costs and measurements in natural and open, pressureless waterways and canals;
  • monitoring sewage and wastewater at a distance with notification of problem situations, for example, overflowing sewers and clogging of drains;
  • sending information and system status messages;
  • response to internal / external signals, for example, to closing and opening the lid;
  • alarm, including emergency;
  • fluid level adjustment by controlling actuators according to the rules laid down in the sensor;
  • SMS-, GSM-, GPS-informing about events at a distance, used in the form of mobile communications and industrial protocols;
  • monitoring the state of the water surface on rivers, lakes, dams, dams in order to prevent emergency situations and floods;
  • tracking the location of plying tanks in rail and road transport, the process of loading and unloading them.

In flowmeter applications, the complex electronic system of the device plays a huge role. It is adapted to work with standard trays, including Parshall trays.

Advantages and disadvantages

In addition to the fact that the ultrasonic liquid level sensor effectively performs its tasks, it is quite inexpensive. Also among the advantages are:

  • data storage;
  • increased signal accuracy, i.e. ultrasound;
  • the ability to use offline;
  • lack of contact with the measured liquid.

The ultrasonic liquid level sensor is compact in size and installs easily and quickly. It is worth noting that it also has drawbacks. For example, if a strong wind blows or a high dust content is observed, then the data may be inaccurate. Another point: measuring the amount of liquid in a vacuum with this device is difficult. In this case, it is better to use units that operate on microwave signals.
