Sewer coupling: types, description, features of products for pipes

Both a residential building and a commercial building cannot do without a properly functioning sewer system. In order to eliminate leaks and frequent repairs during the installation of communications, only high-quality sewer couplings should be used. At its core, the design of the coupling resembles an ordinary pipe, however, there are special thickenings on the sides - stiffeners and sockets, which greatly facilitate the installation process. Before starting work, it is necessary to determine some important nuances, first of all, what type of coupling to use for sewer communications equipment. We will study this question in more detail.

Plastic couplings

Plastic couplings for sewage systems

In recent years, couplings for the formation of sewers are made of plastic. It can be polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polypropylene, the main advantages of which are:

  • A sufficiently long period of time there is no corrosion.
  • Increased resistance to aggressive chemical environments.
  • There is the possibility of the formation of any sewer structures.
  • Reduces the likelihood of clogging.
  • High throughput.
  • Long service life.
  • Fairly small mass of products.
  • Simple and quick installation.
  • Compatibility with other materials.
  • Affordable price.

Such material is resistant to high and low temperatures. Couplings for sewer pipes made of polypropylene are quite flexible. Due to this, even if the pipe freezes and ice forms inside it, which will expand more and more, the polypropylene sleeve will not break. PVC elements are less flexible.

Metal couplings

Metal couplings

Another material from which sewer couplings are made is metal. For these purposes, stainless or galvanized steel is most often used. Metal clamping devices are mounted in most cases to connect two types of pipes from different materials. It is not always possible to completely replace the old cast-iron sewage system with a more advanced plastic system. In this situation, one has to be content with only a partial replacement of certain elements of the sewage system.

A metal coupling is used if there is a thread in the old pipe that will be attached to the plastic. A metal sewer sleeve can also be purchased with an already formed thread.

Couplings

This type of product is considered the most common and is two oppositely directed bell. The narrowing between them allows you to place the fitting symmetrically with respect to both pipes. The fact is that the bells directed against the stream practically do not create resistance, and, more importantly, they do not pick up garbage.

Otherwise, when the sockets are directed along the flow of drains, often collect rags, hair and various impurities, which forms a blockage.

Installation tips

Coupling Installation

The main field of application for sewer couplings is the repair and fastening of additional taps. As a rule, they are used with another shaped part - a compensating branch pipe.

Installation sequence of the connecting clamping device:

  1. A certain section of the pipe is dismantled using a grinder.
  2. The ends are deburred.
  3. An external chamfer is also removed from the ends.
  4. A coupling is mounted on the lower pipe.
  5. A compensating branch pipe is put on the upper pipe, which is tightened to the stop.
  6. The socket of an oblique or straight tee is mounted on the smooth end of the compensator.
  7. Then the tee together with the compensator moves down the pipe to connect with the socket of the coupling.
  8. The design is fixed with clamps under each bell. This is necessary in order to avoid undocking of connections in the future.

Coupling for repair work

The so-called repair type of fitting differs from the previous model only in the absence of narrowing between the funnels: it has the same inner diameter along the entire length. This function allows you to freely move the coupling over a smooth pipe or butt to join smooth pipes. Accordingly, this type of sewer coupling is used to eliminate defects on smooth, solid sections of the pipeline.

Mounting a repair type coupling

The following sequence of actions is performed:

  • A cut is made near the damaged area on the pipe.
  • The ends of the pipe are disconnected relative to each other. If necessary, the pipe is freed from the nearest fasteners.
  • Burrs and chamfers are removed at cuts.
  • The clamping device is mounted on one of the pipes.
  • Centering is in progress.
  • A second pipe is attached to the coupling and is firmly fixed with a clamp.
Corrugated couplings

Corrugated sleeve

Such a device is considered more perfect and versatile due to its design. The main part of this fitting is made in the form of an accordion, due to which the transitional sewer coupling is able to move in all directions without losing its original characteristics.

Initially, such parts were used to connect only corrugated pipes, but today corrugated fittings can be used for other purposes. In most cases, accordion-shaped couplings can be found as water outlets.

Rubber couplings

Rubber fittings

Sewer rubber coupling is used to form sewer networks, where there are pipes made of different materials. The connecting element allows you to form a single pipeline design, certain sections of which can have different traffic, that is, pipes of different diameters are used.

It is necessary to use transitional cuffs made of rubber mainly for the formation of internal sewerage networks in residential, public and commercial buildings, as well as in those buildings where there is a transition from cast iron pipes to polypropylene sewer pipes. The maximum fluid temperature for such couplings is +95 degrees.

fire couplings

Fire Couplings

Fire spreads most often due to unprotected communication networks, including sewage. To stop the fire, fire fittings are actively installed. The inner part of the connecting element consists of rubber and graphite with impurities of other materials, which have the ability to increase in size when heated and not ignite. When expanding, the inner liner almost completely covers the lumen of the sewer network, while creating a solid flame barrier.

Installation tips

A sewer sliding sleeve can be installed by both an experienced specialist and a person with a minimum level of knowledge in the field of plumbing. Several nuances of repair work:

  1. Before pipes with fittings are mounted, the inner and outer parts of the elements must be well cleaned of any contaminants. This will create a stronger and more durable connection.
  2. In case of formation of an uneven surface of the socket, it is recommended to create a tight connection. To do this, the sealing cuff "sit" on the silicone sealant. The material is applied exclusively to a dry surface.
  3. When the leakage did not form due to cracking of the rubber of the fitting, it is possible to stop the leak by applying a clamp from the knitting wire.

Before acquiring a particular type of sewer coupling, it is necessary to evaluate which pipes will be cut, where exactly it is planned to establish communications and what role the coupling should play in this case.
