History

Tver Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden (Tver) was founded back in 1879 by the honorary citizen of the city, the merchant of the first guild, Ilya Ivanovich Bobrov. He planned to set up a green private estate on the banks of the Tvertsa River. The merchant personally planted oaks and larch trees, which still rustle with foliage and adorn the arboretum. Elegant wooden galleries were laid here, a rotunda gazebo was set up, and an arched bridge was built.

In 1898, the owner of the site was the teacher of natural sciences and botany Leonid Antonovich Kolakovsky. He assembled a rich collection of trees, shrubs and flowers, forming planting plants on a geographical basis. Through the efforts of Kolakovsky, the estate turned into a small botanical garden. Leonid Antonovich assigned a small experimental site, where he conducted practical classes for students. In 1930, according to the will of the owner, the Botanical Garden (Tver) became the property of the city.

Since then, the famous botanists A.A. Lebedev and M.L. Nevsky have been engaged in the garden. They significantly expanded the collection of the arboretum, laid new exhibits, and built a greenhouse.

Decades passed, and the ancient landscapes, despite the turbulent historical events and the rapid urban development, miraculously survived. Today, the Botanical Garden (Tver), the photo of which is in the article, is the pride of the city.
