In the modern world, when there is sorely lack of time not only for pets, but also for family, the question of how to train a puppy to a tray is becoming more and more relevant. The easiest way to solve this problem is for owners of small dogs, although my Staffordshire Terrier coped with the task with great success.
Many people who want to have a pet do not know how to teach a puppy to the tray, and often prefer animals that do not need constant walking. When our old pet died 10 years ago, and I decided to get a new dog, my first action was to teach the puppy to the tray. In this case, several issues were resolved at once:
- there was no need to take the pet out for a walk strictly by the hour;
- Households who did not want to take the dog out faced a very difficult dilemma: either to take the puppy out to the street, or to remove the waste of his life from the tray;
- in an extreme case, when the dog stays alone for a long time, she does not have to endure, in addition, there is no longer the problem of cleaning piles and puddles throughout the apartment.
In general, from which side do not look, the question of how to teach a puppy to the tray has become a priority for me. There was no information on this subject at that time, therefore, following my experience in raising dogs and getting them to order, I began to develop my own upbringing scheme. Everyone knows that a small puppy often makes puddles and heaps in different places. I left my puppy for a long time in the corridor, which for him became a "place of residence". It is easiest to train a puppy to the tray when the dog has a rather limited space for moving around the apartment. When my puppy was left alone, I closed all the interior doors and opened the door to the toilet, where on the floor there was a wide plastic tray, in which lay a rag soaked in the puppy's urine. At this time, in order to discourage the smell of urine from those places where the puppy used to be emptied, I washed the floors with soap and water at least twice a day. In the end, the dog to send their needs chose a rag with its own smell and did their "business" in the tray. Of course, a flawless hit in it was often not observed, but at least the dog realized that it was necessary to cope with his need exactly in the toilet with a tray.
The problem of how to teach a puppy to the tray was solved in just 1.5 months. Some time after the puppy realized that he had a place in his apartment where he could empty himself as a last resort, I stopped putting a rag in the tray. If my dog went to the toilet in the apartment, it was only necessary to flush the contents of the tray into the toilet, wash it and wipe the tiles on the floor with chlorinated water. After this procedure, the smell of excrement completely disappears.
Even simpler is the case with the training in the tray of small dog breeds. For their natural needs, you can buy a regular "cat toilet" and use a special filler for it. It is easy to care for such a tray, since contaminated filler can be removed with a special spatula. A new filler is poured into the place of the cleaned.
When you notice that the little puppy is looking for a place to meet his needs, move him to a place with a tray where he can empty without punishment. Even if you did not manage to transfer the puppy on time, still do it. The dog will soon realize that this place is intended for the toilet. The main thing is that access to this place is always free.
I still do not regret having accustomed my dog to the tray. I began to teach her at the age of 1.5 months, but now, when she is already 10 years old, in case of emergency she goes to the tray, which is constantly in the toilet, when she needs to.
