Museum of Russian impressionism: description, collections and interesting facts

The direction in painting, called "impressionism", originated in France. However, very soon it spread throughout the world, forcing artists to abandon the accepted static canons in favor of dynamism. At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century a Russian school of impressionism was formed, the works of the followers of which were more material and substantive than those of their French colleagues.

At the end of May 2016, reports appeared in the press about the opening of a new cultural facility on the territory of the former Bolshevik confectionery factory. The Museum of Russian Impressionism (this collection of art received its name) invites everyone to see the canvases of famous artists who worked at the turn of the last year and last century, and to take part in various educational events.

Building

The Museum of Russian Impressionism (address: 15 Leningradsky pr., Building 11) is housed in a building that was reconstructed from the former warehouse of the Bolshevik factory. The architectural project was carried out by the British architectural bureau John McAslan and Partners. Outside, the building has minimalist features, and the layout of the interior was made taking into account the need to use the most advanced museum technologies. In particular, the creators of the project tried to make the most of the opportunities that the round shape of the building provided for them. As a result, a multilayer curved screen appeared. It was decided to use it for projecting installations of a contemporary artist from the USA, Jean-Christophe Cue, who demonstrate the process of creating paintings.

Permanent exhibition

The Museum of Russian Impressionism was created, first of all, thanks to the well-known philanthropist Boris Mints, who decided to make his private collection public. In total, 80 works are presented in the main exposition, located on the first and second floors of the building. Among them are canvases by such masters of Russian impressionism as K. Korovin, K. Yuon, Yu. Pimenov, V. Serov, P. Konchalovsky and others. Since there are many paintings in the museum’s storerooms that also deserve attention, it is planned to produce them from time to time changes in the composition of exhibited paintings.

Exhibitions

The first works with which the Museum of Russian Impressionism decided to acquaint visitors in honor of its opening were the canvases of a little-known artist Arnold Lakhovsky. The exhibition will run until August 27, 2016. Fans of painting can see almost fifty paintings from several private collections and 12 museums. In addition to paintings from the Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum and other famous collections, several works from private American and European collections are presented, which are almost never exhibited.

A distinctive feature of the work of Lakhovsky, according to contemporaries, is the ability to depict plots of the Wanderers in the style of the Impressionists. The highlight of the exhibition is the canvas, one side of which is the picture "Galician types", and the wrong side is the landscape. Prior to restoration, the artist's second work was hidden under a layer of dirt, and it was discovered recently. The canvas is placed in a special frame that allows you to see both pictures at once.
