Once upon a time in the place of the modern Siberian town of Yalutorovsk there was a Tatar settlement Yavlu-Tur. However, by the time of the conquest of Siberia by Ermak, these places were deserted and abandoned. The Yalutorovsky prison was first mentioned in the report of the governor Fedor Verigin to Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich dated 1659. Historic buildings in this area have not been preserved to this day. More recently, the prison was rebuilt as a cultural and ethnographic complex. And today everyone can visit this amazing open-air museum.
Historical reference
Yalutorovsky prison was an important link in the eastern defensive line, stretching along the shores of Iset and Tobol. This outpost was erected to protect the south-eastern approaches to Tyumen and Tobolsk from nomads. All the buildings of the prison were made of wood - the most accessible material in these parts. The defensive post was surrounded by wooden walls with a picket fence. Gradually, the city grew and entered modern history as Yalutorovsk. Over time, it lost its strategic importance, and its inhabitants began to live a quiet peaceful life. The buildings of the historical prison have not survived to modern days. By the 350th anniversary of the city, it was decided to reconstruct the old settlement and turn it into a museum and tourist complex.
Modern museum
Drawings and photographs of the old prison have not been preserved. All reconstruction work was carried out on the basis of documentary written evidence. The Yalutorovsky prison was erected on the territory of 1.5 hectares precisely at the place where the original historical building was once located. On the territory enclosed by the picket fence: the first settler's estate with a barn, a well and outbuildings; handicraft workshops, observation decks, and a guard square. During the tour, tourists can take very interesting and vivid photographs, admire copies of the masterpieces of Russian architects, and visit museum exhibits. On the territory of the prison, themed holidays and various cultural events are regularly held.
Museum expositions
The museum complex offers its guests interactive excursions. In the estate of the first settler, the hostess will treat guests with dishes of national cuisine, offer to bake bread in the oven together and give them tasty herbal tea. In the workshops, tourists are invited to learn more about the crafts, common in this area at the turn of the XVII-XVIII centuries. This is carving and painting on wood, weaving, pottery, weaving from a rod, patchwork. Guests are also invited to participate in workshops. The exposition "folk attraction" will introduce tourists to the fun of our ancestors. In the basement of the barn is a museum dedicated to the life of people in this area in past centuries. Thematic expositions include a model of an ancient dwelling, a funeral boat, an armory, a torture chamber and a judge’s office. During the tour, for an additional fee, you can take pictures in the armor of soldiers of different nationalities. Do not forget to climb to the observation deck, they offer a magnificent view of the Yalutorovsky Ostrog. The museum complex also has a souvenir shop.

open-air museum is located in the city of Yalutorovsk. In the warm season, the complex is open from 10.00 to 18.00, daily except Mondays. Carefully read the rules of conduct when entering the territory. Most objects and household items are designed for interactive activities. However, it is not recommended to touch some exhibits. On the territory of the complex, you can conduct a professional photo shoot or personal event. In the winter season, the Yalutorovsky Ostrog reduces working hours. In severe frosts and under special weather conditions, the museum does not work.
