Surface painting is the easiest and most affordable way to protect structures and building elements from the effects of the external environment. Types of alkyd paints in composition
All paints are a complex composition consisting of a pigment, a binder, a solvent and auxiliary components to give an additional effect. Alkyd paint is also a mixture of the components listed above. According to the type of astringent component, paints based on alkyd are divided into the following groups: oil (astringent - ordinary drying oil) and enamel (based on alkyd varnishes).
The marking of alkyd oil paints is “MA”, it is indicated on the bank. When using glyphthalic and pentaphthalic drying oil in the manufacture of the coloring composition, the corresponding marking "GF" and "PF" are indicated on the bank.
All oil paints, including alkyd oil paint, contain a small amount of varnish. The dried layer of the coloring composition is relatively weak for mechanical stress. Such paints are gradually losing their popularity.
Enamel paints have higher performance characteristics. Namely:
- quick drying;
- resistance to chemically aggressive substances;
- high rate of abrasion;
- environmental friendliness.
Most often, pentaphthalic enamels (marking "PF") are used, less often glyphthalic (marking "GF"). Their basis is alkyd-pentaphthalic and alkyd-glyphthalic varnish, respectively. Their distinctive ability is high water resistance due to the formation of a thin high-strength film. The alkyd-urethane paint, which is ideally suited for painting iron structures exposed to the environment, is particularly notable. This paint covers the surface of pipelines, industrial equipment, railway cars, etc. It is also suitable for interior painting work - painting heating radiators, water pipes, concrete and brick walls, wooden structures and decor elements.
Types of Alkyd Paints by Purpose
Each alkyd paint is a product that is produced in accordance with the relevant GOST with the indication of marking. On the can of paint is indicated a cipher of two letters and three numbers. The letters indicate the type of coloring agent in composition, the first digit is the scope and purpose, the last two are the catalog code. The decoding of the first digits for the purpose is as follows:
- "0" - compositions for priming;
- “1” - for external use only;
- "2" - for use in the production of internal work;
- "3" - temporary coloring formulations, the main use of which is for marking or sealing;
- "4" - waterproof coloring compounds;
- "5" - a special paint designed to protect objects and structures from rodents;
- "6" - products with high resistance to gasoline and oils;
- "7" - chemically resistant paint;
- "8" - products with high heat resistance;
- "9" - paints with electrical insulation properties.
Matte enamel
It so happens that to create harmony in the interior or to implement some design ideas, you need to create a matte surface. Special alkyd paint is capable of this. In addition, it still has useful qualities: it withstands temperatures in the range from -50 to +600 degrees Celsius, is economically consumed (depending on the quality of the surface, the flow rate is from 80 to 170 g / m2), it can be diluted with an ordinary solvent like solvent or white spirit. And one more advantage is the paint, the price of which is affordable for almost anyone who wants to buy it.
Spray paints
For ease of use and transportation, alkyd paints are produced in aerosol cans. They are easy to use, just spray on the surface to be painted. There is no need for a brush or roller, solvent or spray gun. For coloring a small area in places with difficult access, such cartridges are indispensable.
Alkyd Paint Tips
Regardless of the selected application method, there is one nuance that must be taken into account. The fact is that alkyd paint is a composition that does not hide small defects on the surface, and even emphasizes them. Therefore, it is necessary to perfectly level the surface before painting, that is, puttying with subsequent grinding.
Immediately before applying a layer of the paint composition, it is recommended that the surface be treated with a primer. This will improve the adhesion of the paint itself to the surface and give it extra strength.
If alkyd paint has thickened in a jar, it can be diluted with white spirit or solvent. The volume of solvent should not exceed 10% of the volume of paint.
