Flag of Cuba: The Lonely Star of Socialism in the Camp of Democrats

For many countries, Cuba is a prime example of freedom and independence. This state is located on the island of the same name in the Caribbean. The unofficial name of the republic is Liberty Island.

Independent Socialist Caribbean

Many countries of the world have a feeling of envy for this country: after all, only one of the democratic โ€œwhalesโ€ of North, South and Central America managed to establish its political system. Cuba is currently the only Western hemisphere republic where socialism rules. In the country's parliament, the largest number of seats are held by representatives of the strongest and most numerous Communist Party.

Throughout the world, the flag of Cuba often adorns the cabinets and rooms of people who are fans of the ideas of Fidel Castro and Ernesto Che Guevara. It was these people who took a desperate step and decided to lead the liberation movement in the territory of their country, captured by the Spaniards and Americans. Thanks to the tangible support of the people and the correct distribution of priorities and forces, at the beginning of the 20th century, the flag of Cuba first hoisted in the sky over the island of the Caribbean with the same name. The republic has become an independent and free state.

What is depicted on the banner of the country?

The modern flag of Cuba is a rectangular canvas, on which the main part is occupied by horizontal stripes. There are five in total. Equal in width, they are painted in two colors: white (2 stripes) and blue (3 stripes). The left side of the banner is an equilateral triangle with a red color. The base of the figure is equal in length to the side of the flag. In the middle of the triangle is a five-pointed star of white color. In almost all cases (over state buildings, over embassies, during international summits, etc.), a banner is used whose proportions of the lengths of the sides are 7:10.

History of occurrence

As mentioned above, the territory of modern Cuba for a long time could not be divided between the Americans and the Spaniards. Two world powers did not want to give each other a tidbit. Located at the crossroads of trade routes, Cuba was the "key" to the New World. At the end of the 19th century, the Spaniards owned the island. In 1868, the people of the country embarked on the path of revolution. The national liberation war was aimed at making the country independent and free from any colonists. The then-named (in 1884) Miguel Tolon, who served as editor of the newspaper Pravda, came up with the flag of Cuba, whose pictures for a long time were only paper images.

What was its foundation?

The US flag was used as the foundation for creating the national symbol of the country , which is a reflection of independence and indicating the path of freedom of citizens. The flag of Cuba first hoisted over the island in 1850. This event was preceded by an unsuccessful attempt by General Lopez to free the northern coast of the island from the colonists. It was then that the name of the banner sounded for the first time - "The Lonely Star".

In 1902, the flag of Cuba, whose photo is presented in the article, was proclaimed the official and sole banner of this independent socialist state.

The meaning of the banner and its elements

Three blue horizontal stripes on the flag of the country symbolize the three parts of the state into which it was divided by the Spaniards. White lines represent the desire of these territories to unite. The triangle depicted on the pennant was borrowed from the Masonic movement. It symbolizes freedom, brotherhood and equality. The red color of this figure represents the blood shed by the Cubans in the process of gaining independence. The star, called the "Lonely Star", is intended to illuminate the path of the people to freedom and a brighter future. A similar symbol is found on the flag of the US state of Texas.
