There is another version. In the Udmurt language, the word "atas" means "cock". There is such an old tale about this bird. Allegedly, a rooster lived in the village, and he loved to bully everyone and fight for no reason. All residents at his approach shouted: "Atas!" - and hid home. It is quite possible that this word was borrowed from this language and took root among the Russian people.

Among those serving a sentence for crime, this word means a warning of danger. During a robbery or other unlawful case, a person is put on a “rascal”. While partners run their dirty business, he watches the situation in the area. Seeing a policeman or random passers-by, he shouts, “Atas!” - letting the rest know that the time has come to blow legs.
