It is used not only to enrich the soil with nutrients, but also as an excellent means of pest control. Sprinkling cabbage and onion beds with fine ash protects plants from onion and cabbage flies. Ash is also used when planting potatoes to protect it from wireworm and Colorado potato beetle, showers and all cruciferous berries are showered to protect it from cruciferous fleas.
