It suddenly seemed to Rostov that he was in some kind of magical world, where instead of a guardhouse there was a cave, instead of a fire there was a monster's eye, and he himself was sitting on a high tower. Everything around was unreal, and Petya closed his eyes. Solemn music sounded in his head, which became louder and more distinct. Finally, he realized that it was in a dream. Through the slumber he controlled the sounds, listening to their beauty. Still a boy, kind, open and far from the world of cruelty in which he found himself - such may be the characterization of the hero at this moment.
Petya Rostov woke up from the voice of Likhachev, sharpening his saber. Jumping up, he saw that the Cossacks were preparing horses, and Denisov was leaving the guardhouse.
In battle
Sitting in the saddle, Rostov again asked Denisov to give some kind of task, the same ordered to stay close and not go anywhere. However, when the signal shot rang out, Petya rushed forward. He passed the bridge and did not make out where his, and where the enemies. Jumping to the crowd, I saw the Frenchman squeezing the shaft of the peaks directed at him. This even more provoked the young man, and with a cry of “Hurray!” he rushed to where the most shots were fired. In the courtyard of the lord's house he noticed Dolokhov, who ordered the infantry to wait. But Petya was possessed by the feeling that he did not obey the officer, and all with the same scream rushed on. Suddenly the young man began to weirdly wave his arms, releasing the reins, and stray from the saddle. At that moment, when the horse stopped in front of a smoldering fire, Petya fell. His legs and arms twitched, although his head did not move: a bullet pierced her. So the very young Petya Rostov died.
