Switzerland is one of those countries that automatically recognize citizenship by mother or father. But if a person was born in this country, this does not mean that automatically he becomes its citizen. But what to do to someone whose parents are not porters? How to obtain citizenship in Switzerland?
Today, there are two legal ways to obtain citizenship. It can get:
- foreigners who have lived in the country for more than 12 years and have a residence permit. Children of non-citizens of this country from 10 to 20 years old, who have lived and studied in Switzerland for more than 6 years.
- spouses of Swiss citizens.

A person who has lived in the country for more than 12 years has the legal right to file an application, since he can obtain citizenship in Switzerland on a common basis. Concerning
children, then one year of residence counts as two.
After submitting the petition, the state authorities of the country are engaged in an audit, during which they find out at the federal level the citizen’s law-abiding behavior and check whether he poses a threat to the country's security.
The second stage of identity verification is the collection of information by cantons and governing bodies at the place of residence. Such work creates a complete personality profile. At the same time, the level of integration in Swiss society, knowledge of the situation in the country and the peculiarities of living in it, fulfillment of duties in the field of taxation and the judicial system are clarified.
After a full check, in which there were no unnecessary questions, the application for citizenship is submitted to the Federal Migration Service, where only state permission is given. But this is not the whole process. And since you need to obtain citizenship with the permission of local authorities - cantons and communities, then the applicant for citizenship turns to local authorities. Those, in turn, may put forward additional requirements for the rules of residence and the level of compliance with this canton and this community. And only after the resolution of the specific canton and the affirmative answer of the community can one obtain Swiss citizenship.
Double citizenship
Some countries do not recognize dual citizenship and in order to become a full-fledged citizen, you have to give up citizenship of another country. Switzerland is quite loyal in this matter, since getting a second citizenship
permitted on a legal basis by decree of 01.01.92.
