Miniature, cozy, atmospheric - such is Nerekhta located in the Kostroma region . Sights of the village, which are preserved in excellent condition, attract tourists here year after year. It is not surprising that it belongs to the number of cities belonging to the Small Golden Ring. So, what to see, once in this ancient place?
A bit of history
The twelfth century is the time when Nerekhta first appears in the annals, the sights of which nowadays serve as a magnet for curious travelers. The first record dates back to 1214, from it you can find out what the heirs of Vsevolod the Big Nest fought for the city.
Not only internal wars survived this settlement, Nerekhta withstood the attack of the Tatars, which happened in the 13th century. The first monastery on its territory was built by Pachomius, a student of Radonezh. According to the chronicles, construction was completed in 1365. It is interesting that in this Pakhomievo-Nerekhtinsky monastery you can pray even today. It is also known that this city was once visited by Peter the Great, during his first and last visit the autocrat was still a little boy.
Nerekhta: sights of the city
St. Nicholas Church is a spiritual stronghold of the city, which has a difficult history. Back in 1710, Nerekhta acquired this temple, the sights of which are famous for their antiquity. Historians are still debating about the donations of a merchant who allowed the church to be erected. The names of Simonov, Zimin are called. The murals were answered by the famous masters of Shustova.
A difficult period came for the temple in 1931, when it was turned into a warehouse. The old church gained its former status only fifty years later; restoration work was carried out. Fortunately, valuable frescoes dating back to the 18th century were also saved, and the gilded seven-tier iconostasis was restored to its former appearance. Legend has it that a person ringing church bells cleanses the soul of filth.
At the moment, services are no longer held in the stone temple. It is turned into a museum, which everyone can visit.
Vladimir Church
The religious city is Nerekhta, the sights of the village are primarily churches. Tourists who find themselves here must certainly see the Vladimir Church. Its construction was completed in 1686, this happened thanks to the donations of co-rulers Peter and Fedor Romanov. The church is interesting not only in antiquity, but also in its original design; it is two-pillar. Wall painting was completed in 1775.
Once the temple was part of the Sretensky girl’s monastery, established in the city in 1634, but it was destroyed in the 30s of the last century. Only in 2004 the church reopened its doors for believers, and the shrines confiscated many years ago were returned to it.
Kazan Cathedral
Kazan Cathedral is another ancient religious building that the city of Nerekhta is justly proud of (its attractions are described in this article). The construction of the temple was completed in 1713. In the first half of the 19th century, the cathedral acquired a 60-meter bell tower, which is perfectly preserved.
After the revolution, the temple was discontinued. By the decree of the new government he was turned into a bakery, this status has remained unchanged in our days. For many years, there has been talk of restoration, but funds are not yet available for the work. When visiting this place, you should definitely climb the observation bell tower, which offers a bewitching view of the city.
Barbarian church
What other sights of Nerekhta (Kostroma region) deserve attention ? Once in this place, you should definitely see the Barbarian Church. The author of the project in the Baroque style was the famous architect Stepan Vorotilov. The stone temple was erected at the end of the 18th century. The church from afar attracts attention with rich decoration; the architect generously endowed it with decorative elements.
The temple was also banned after the revolution; services were not carried out for more than fifty years. In 1983-95, it was restored, reopened for parishioners.
It is interesting that Vorotilov built another bright city attraction - the Ilyinsky Temple. The architecture is designed in the spirit of the late Baroque. During the years of the Soviet Union, the church was used as a mechanical workshop. After its collapse, restoration work was carried out, then the temple was returned to believers.
Shopping arcade

Malls were about to open for residents of the village, when significant errors were made during the construction. There were reasonable doubts about the strength of the building, in order to avoid accidents, its commissioning was postponed for a few more years. Reconstruction was completed only in 1837, after which, finally, the building was opened.

The description of the house, which was once owned by the merchant Khvorinov, traditionally includes the mention of the nickname that the local life awarded the building. House-sock - this is what the people call this building, which is associated with its original form. The building is worth seeing already for the sake of facade decoration, made in the spirit of early classicism.
It is interesting that once in this house Emperor Paul the First, who visited the city while traveling from Kazan to Yaroslavl, had a chance to rest. The story is silent about whether the autocrat liked the building.
The House of Dyakonovs also deserves the attention of the guests of Nerekhta. Many years ago, it was the property of a wealthy merchant dynasty. This building attracts interest with its monumentality, rich decoration of facades. Small side mezzanines and high arched windows also look unusual .
