When water is chosen as the heat carrier, all metal elements of the heating system gradually rust. Pipelines are the first to suffer. Corrosion also destroys metal structures, it is also dangerous because fragments of rust exfoliate and clog the heating system. In addition, the system is clogged with particles of sludge, dirt, sand, etc. Therefore, special cleaning is required, and for this, dirt collectors for heating systems are installed.
Appointment
These devices are designed to clean the coolant from medium and large suspended particles in hot water, heating and heat supply systems of ventilation equipment.
Design features
Mud sumps for heating systems externally represent a node for expanding the pipeline with filtering water with a special mesh and changing its direction. Under the grid, clipping, precipitation and subsequent accumulation of medium and large suspended particles are carried out.
The sumps must be mounted in such a way as to allow easy access for cleaning and inspection. In most cases, they are installed on TP control nodes and inputs to the building.
Varieties
Depending on the mounting method, type of mounting and design, this equipment can be presented in the following options:
- With flange connection.
- With threaded connection.
- Subscriber.
- Horizontal
- Vertical.
The design and structure of the filter require the presence of a removable nozzle or bottom to remove filtered fragments, as well as a valve for bleeding air and coolant.

Conditions for normal operation
A condition for the normal functioning of the filter for cleaning heating water is a gradual increase in its hydraulic resistance according to the indicators of devices before and after this equipment.
Passport
Another important point worth stopping at is the passport, which should be included in the delivery package of the dirt collector. This document reflects the following important information about the device:
- Marking and scope of delivery.
- Information about the manufacturer.
- Compliance with GOST or TU.
- User's manual.
- Dimensions and specifications.
- Symbol, purpose and name.
Additional benefits
The mud sump contributes to fuel economy. Using this water filter (photo below), you thereby protect the convective elements of the boilers - this, in turn, preserves their high efficiency and does not increase the amount of fuel. Accordingly, there is no overspending of fuel, which leads to impressive financial costs.
In addition, the sump filter allows you to significantly change or pump water in the heating system, which also contributes to savings, since it does not require reagents and excess electrical energy. The volume of coolant that is discharged into the sewage system is also reduced.
The cost of these devices may vary, depending on their type and size. The most common is a strainer for water (photo below). On such equipment, a filtration grid is built into its casing.
Principle of operation
The principle of operation of mud collectors of any type is carried out according to an extremely simple scheme:
The coolant enters the pipe, and then goes into the body. Dirt particles settle to the bottom.
Then water from the inner cavity of the sump enters the filter installed in the outlet pipe.
After that, the cleaned coolant enters the pipelines of the heating system.
Purification from dirt particles occurs by removing the glass from the outlet pipe. The lower part of the sump body must be periodically cleaned of accumulated dirt. The sump filter is connected to the pipelines using either a thread or flanges.
Magnetic sumps are considered an excellent invention. Rust is attracted to the magnet, which in no way affects the intensity of the flow of water in the heating system. Particles caught by the magnet accumulate in specially designed places.
Due to the fact that the mud collectors for heating systems do not change pressure, they can be used on the suction line of pumping equipment of high power. In this case, the magnet externally is a thin cylinder with a diameter of about 40 mm.
Some consumers doubt that installing a sump in the heating pipe is so important. Those who believe that the system will function perfectly without this device should say that, of course, you can do without it. But at the same time, the operational life of the system will be significantly reduced due to pollution and other factors associated with this. And the efficiency of the heating system will also be reduced.
The advantages of this product are undeniable, especially when the operation of the heating system requires frequent cleaning of boilers and pipelines. Sumps also come to the rescue in the winter, when the radiators are still not warm enough.
So, the advantages of a sump for heating systems are obvious. Moreover, its cost is relatively low. So do not think too much about whether to install a filter for the heating system. Of course, to purchase this product is much more profitable than to repair any breakdown or to replace the pipelines of the system.
It is also worth considering the moment that, in addition to financial costs, interruptions in the operation of the heating system can bring a lot of emotions.
With a mud sump, the system will function reliably, and most importantly, the likelihood of emergency situations will be reduced.
