There are words about the origin of which we do not have a clear understanding. But it seems that we know exactly how they arose. Each person, probably, can put forward a hypothesis about the adjective "meticulous". This version is likely to be erroneous. Today we find out where the word came from and what it means.
Origin
People quite rightly can associate meticulousness and a similar noun “nausea” with family ties. Perhaps they are, but the adjective derives its pedigree from another word - "accuracy". Confusion arises because in the object of study there is an alternation of “h” and “w”. Initially, there was a preposition “before” and a noun in the genitive case of a “point”. A man who wants to find out "to the point" penetrates the very essence of things, dives into the depths. Note that here love or attention to details of meticulous people is not even recorded, but the essence of the matter is said. Although such subjects often cause nausea in others, this is such a strange association.
Value
After the origin has become known, it is easy and pleasant to talk about the meaning of the word. According to the explanatory dictionary, the meticulous is an inquisitive person who delves into everything.
Of course, if you think about the inspectors who look at every little thing, then meticulousness as quality cannot delight or endear people. But the dictionary tells us that this is a valuable personality trait, anyway. Indeed, on the one hand, it is a pleasure to have such an employee in the state, on the other, the side that suffers from him cannot appreciate the whole measure of his happiness.
Professions that require thoroughness
Readers may include meticulous people. This is very likely. And it may happen that they don’t know where exactly, in which area to apply themselves. We are ready to help them and announce the approximate list of professions in which they will not disappear. So, the list is as follows:
- doctor;
- teacher;
- pilot;
- driver;
- builder, architect, engineer;
- jeweler;
- editor, corrector;
- florist.
The list is endless in the long run, because any specialist should be meticulous. This, of course, is in a good sense of the word. But I must say that in compiling the list there is a certain principle. The first five positions of the list are those specialists whose mistakes involve human sacrifice. Therefore, they need to be especially careful, and the last three are works in which a person is responsible to himself, and no one except the potential addressee will suffer for his mistakes. But the reputation will spoil. After all, this is also important.
We've figured out what meticulous is. Hopefully now the meaning of the adjective is clear.
