Viktor Vladimirovich was born in September 1947 in Moscow. His family was close to power, since his father (Vladimir Ivanovich) had the highest diplomatic rank, and in addition, was Stalin's personal translator.

Mother, Galina Nikolaevna, together with her husband graduated from the Moscow Institute of Foreign Languages and worked as a translator.

From 1955 to 1959 he lived with his parents in France, since his father was an adviser to the USSR Embassy there.

After graduation, he entered the Moscow State University, Faculty of Philology (Romano-Germanic department). In 1970 he graduated with success. Three years later, he went to graduate school, choosing the Institute of World Literature for this. In 1975, he already defended his Ph.D. thesis, which was later published in the United States as the book "Dostoevsky and French existentialism."

Victor Erofeev began publishing in 1967. These were articles in periodicals. He gained fame in 1973 after the publication of an essay on the creative activity of the Marquis de Sade in the journal Literary Issues.

In the late 1970s he organized the release of the literary almanac Metropol. This is a samizdat magazine, because of which he was kicked out of the Writers' Union. In addition, the diplomatic career of Vladimir Ivanovich was somewhat affected.

This incident influenced the literary career of the writer, since Victor Erofeev ceased to be published in his homeland (the ban was lifted in 1988).

In 1989, the first book was published in the Soviet Union entitled "The Body of Anna, or The End of the Russian Avant-Garde". In fact, this is a story, in which it is a girl, sometimes getting fat, then drastically losing weight, who identifies herself either with the poet Akhmatova, or with the Empress Anna Ioannovna.

Victor Erofeev, whose stories are published in whole collections in different countries of the world, gained immense fame thanks to his novel "Russian Beauty". This happened in 1990. The book immediately became super popular, it was translated into twenty languages โ€‹โ€‹of the world. The writer shows in the book the confrontation of two completely different universes - the world of a successful man and the world of a beautiful provincial. These people should not have met, but fate united their lives, while not giving hope for happiness.

The film was shot based on the book (screenwriters Victor Erofeev and Cesare Ferrario), roles were played by both Russian and Western actors (Italy).

In addition, in 1990, a controversial article was published by Yerofeyev "Wake on Soviet literature."

Viktor Yerofeyev, whose books, storybooks and essays are published in large editions not only in Russia but also in Europe and America, spends a lot of time abroad, conducting cycles of lectures on literature.

The writer for some time was the host on the channel "Culture". His Apocrypha program covered various issues of contemporary literature and its interaction with other cultural spheres.

On the radio was the host of the program "Encyclopedia of the Russian Soul."

He is the editor-in-chief of The Penguin Book of New Russian Writing.

Victor Erofeev was married three times. The first wife was a Polish Weslaw Skur. They were married in the early 1970s. In 1976, a son Oleg was born to a Russian writer and a Polish designer. Now he is a successful publisher; among other things, he is publishing his father's books.

Not officially divorcing after twenty-nine years of marriage, Erofeev began to live with a Ukrainian photographer, eighteen-year-old Eugene Durer. In 2005, their daughter Maya was born. However, the birth of a child did not save their relationship. Eugene decided to leave the civil spouse in 2008.

Victor Erofeev is a writer who was twice officially married. The last wife was a fan of the writer Ekaterina, who is forty years younger than him. They have been married since 2010. The wedding was celebrated in the popular restaurant "The Garden", owned by A. Tsekalo and I. Urgant.
