In recent decades, Wright-style homes have become popular. The combination of functionality, spaciousness and unity with nature is what distinguishes this style from others.
Lloyd Wright, the ancestor of style, argued that homes should be one with nature. In his opinion, a beautiful house cannot disturb the landscape. Another statement of the architect - the house should not be the same, as there are no identical people. It is on these statements that Wright's style, which is also called orient, is built.
A bit of history
American architect Frank Lloyd Wright did not just establish his own style. He created a new direction in the philosophy of architecture. His projects are characterized by the idea of continuity of space. This can be seen as his disagreement with classical principles in architecture.
The influence on Wright’s thinking was exerted by oriental, or rather Japanese architecture, which he studied in 1890. This taught him to eliminate unnecessary in projects and to exclude unimportant. Under the influence of Japanese architecture, he develops his own system of flowing into each other's internal spaces.
Wright-style houses (see photo above) differ from each other, but have common features. Architects do not create identical copies of houses. They only retain their stylistic features.
Wright Style Features
Lloyd Wright-style houses are great for suburban construction. The inspiration for the creation of architectural masterpieces was oriental traditions, expressed in hinged roofs, strongly protruding beyond the foundation, as well as the steppes of America with their vast expanses that seem to merge with the horizon. Hence the main features inherent in the style.
Horizontal lines are required for houses in this area of architecture. All buildings (even two-story ones) seem to creep along the ground. Hence the effect of "down to earth."
Flat hinged roofs are another highlight that distinguishes all buildings. The roof necessarily protrudes widely from the wall and helps create a "horizontal silhouette." Often between the floors there are also ledges that are conducive to creating long balconies.
Segmentation. A protruding roof between floors, horizontal roof lines and strict minimalism lines visually divide the entire building into elongated segments. The effect is reinforced by columns that are often found in projects. Looking at a modern Wright-style house, you might think that it was assembled from separate parts (cubes).
Large windows, floor to ceiling. Usually they are decorated with a frame. This helps the building to fit into the landscape, become part of nature. The abundance of light makes the rooms even more spacious.
The use of natural materials. Stone and wood are found as often as glass and concrete. The house is divided into zones through the use of various materials. Recently, siding has been increasingly used.
Home interior
Projects of houses in the Wright style imply unique interiors. A vivid example of this is the "unconventional" division of housing. At the same time, the combined kitchen with living room, as well as a bathtub and a toilet can occupy the largest area. The architect preferred to use fewer rooms, but larger. He did not recognize any division of the building into many small rooms.
A distinctive feature of the style is spacious rooms with high ceilings that smoothly replace each other. The open space of the rooms is filled with natural light through panoramic windows. The division into zones is due to the use of furniture as partitions. As a border, various materials for wall decoration are used.
Features of interior design
The interior of the rooms is planned in such a way that the space and furniture of the room are a single whole. Preference is given to low subjects. Low vertical lines will look great against the background of large windows.
Choose simple, comfortable and functional furniture. Its shade should fit into the color palette, but be different from the color of the wall. They place it without niches and empty spaces.
The exterior design of the building (segmentation, angularity) continues in the interior of the rooms. A vivid example of this is the square fixtures, which additionally emphasize the space.
The combination of different materials is typical for interior decoration. For example, next to the classic kitchen can be located stone-decorated dining room.
The interior of the Wright-style house is decorated with calm, neutral colors. No bright chaotic drawings and elaborate patterns.
Ethnic style and minimalism remind of the American prairies. All houses are striking in their simplicity and uniqueness.
Wright-style house designs
To imagine a house project in the style of prairies, it is worth paying attention to its individual elements.
The roof is always wide three- or four-pitched and has a slight slope. It is visible from any direction. The cornices are wide, significantly removed from the wall.
Panoramic windows on top connect directly to the roof. They are located symmetrically in a group, in the center or around the perimeter. The windows are always decorated, for example, vertical imposts, decorated to match the facade, and below is a strip of concrete or wood.
The facade is divided horizontally through the use of various materials. Parapets, windows, awnings and other parts of the facade are decorated with decorative stripes.
Layout Features
Wright-style houses (up to 150 sq. M. Including) are very spacious and filled with light. This distinguishes them from all other buildings.
The layout of the house is aimed primarily at the comfort of living. The rooms are spacious, conveniently interconnected. They smoothly pass into each other, the space is “continuous”.
Another feature of a Wright-style house is a large outdoor terrace. Not a single country house can do without it.
A modern vision of Wright houses
Architects of our time use the basic ideas that Wright defined. These include wide cornices, a gently sloping roof, cantilevered plans and a vast interior space. Facades are almost not decorated. The center of the building, the fireplace room, is a symbol of family unity. The geometry of the houses is built of rectangles. It is complicated by glazed galleries, balconies, columns, flower beds. Windows allow attics to be bright, and facades rhythmic.
Wright-style houses consist only of rectangular and square rooms that differ in the size and height of the ceilings. The plan grid contains only right angles. An exception is public buildings where circles were used.
The influence of Lloyd Wright architecture on housing construction is undeniable. She is trying to combine modern achievements and nature.
