Twisted lanceolate leaves are a characteristic external feature that these flowers have. Astrameria (the photo shows how bright the petals are) has an umbrella-shaped inflorescence. The latter resemble lilies or azaleas.

Astraemeria: cultivation and care

These plants can be cultivated in open ground throughout the year only in those climatic zones where winters are very warm. Also, the astrameria flower can tolerate a slight freezing of the soil layer. Therefore, in regions with a not very cold climate, you can grow it, covering the rhizomes for the winter with mulch or straw, as well as having a good drainage.

Astrameria flower prefers brightly lit places, without direct sunlight, and loose, moderately nutritious soil. Budding occurs at temperatures above sixteen degrees Celsius. Overheating of the soil will negatively affect the plant. Watering should be moderate, making sure that waterlogging near the roots does not lead to decay. Flowering continues from early summer to mid-August. Some species are easy to propagate by seed. But most still planted by dividing tubers. This must be done in the spring. And after transplantation, one should not expect rapid flowering from the plant. Seeds are sown in May in a mixture of deciduous and soddy soil, after three weeks they begin to care for small seedlings. They can bloom only next year. Astrameric should be protected from pests and diseases. One of the most dangerous is flower thrips, it is eliminated with the help of chlorpyrifos. A powdery worm, whitefly or scabbard are disposed of as follows: all leaves and shoots damaged by the pest are removed, sprayed with special preparations (adapted insecticides).

This bright plant, which is also called the "Peruvian lily" for its exotic beauty, is not inferior to orchids. In the flower market, it is very popular and is part of so many floral arrangements. In addition to beauty, it has another indisputable advantage - it stands for a long time in a cut form (up to two weeks, subject to a regular change of water), without requiring special care. "Peruvian Lily" is used in floral symbolism. Her variegated variety of buds with contrasting touches, being included in the bouquet, mean favor and friendly feelings. Astromeria can be presented to a purposeful girl, emphasizing her independence. In a bouquet, these flowers look good in the company of primroses, orchids and roses. And just a combination of different shades of astromeria in a large armful makes a wonderful impression. They are also used for wedding bouquets and for room decor. You need to remember that the juice of this plant is toxic, and wash your hands thoroughly after contact with it.
