To protect the roof, a wide variety of materials can be used today. One of the most popular, of course, is a metal profile (professional flooring). It is made by cold rolling from high-grade steels. It is possible to make a roof of a metal profile with your own hands, if desired, since one of the undoubted advantages of this material is ease of installation. Used corrugated board can be for roofs of any sizes and configurations. Today, such roofs can be seen everywhere.
What is a corrugated board
The profiled sheet is a plate of a rather thin metal (from 0.5 to 1 mm), coated with a polymer layer. Its surface is made in the form of waves. The dimensions of the metal profile for the roof can be very different. When choosing a type of material, it is first necessary to pay attention to the wave height and thickness of the metal used for its manufacture.
The main advantages of corrugated board
The main advantages of the metal profile, in addition to the ease of installation of sheets, include:
- light weight (from 3 to 20 kg);
- fire resistance;
- environmental cleanliness (metal profile is completely safe for human health);
- durability (sheets of this material are not at all afraid of the effects of ultraviolet radiation, temperature changes, acid rain, etc.);
- low cost (corrugated board - one of the most inexpensive materials to date);
- aesthetic appeal;
- high degree of strength;
- the possibility of recycling.
Metal Profile Disadvantages
The disadvantages of this material are primarily noise. However, when using a sufficiently thick heat-insulating layer, which in this case can be considered as noise-insulating, the consequences of such a drawback can be reduced to practically zero.
If the outer decorative layer is damaged, corrosion may develop on the sheets. A certain disadvantage can also be considered that, when arranging a roof from a metal profile, you need to carefully monitor that the joints between the elements are as tight as possible. Otherwise, the finished roof will leak.
Varieties of material
If we talk about the scope, then there are three types of metal profiles:
- Material brand "C". Used for finishing walls.
- Professional sheet of brand "N". It has the highest strength characteristics and can be used for roofing.
- Material brand "NS". It can be used for the installation of fences, wall cladding, as well as roof protection.
In fact, corrugated board is the cheapest kind of metal profile. In addition to it, there is also a metal tile - a very aesthetic and practical material. The roofs covered with it look just great. Thus, corrugated board and metal tile are the main types of metal profile for roofing.
The main stages of work when installing this type of roof
Installation of a metal profile roof is carried out in several stages:
- the device of the rafter system ;
- installation of vapor barrier;
- installation of heat-insulating material, with the most often used mineral wool;
- installation of a waterproofing layer;
- lathing device;
- installation of a drainage system;
- installation of metal profile sheets;
- sheathing of rafters from the attic side.
Steam-, hydro- and thermal insulation in this case is arranged in the same way as under any other roofing material. The crate is packed taking into account the size of the sheets of the metal profile.
Installation of a drainage system
Before starting the installation of a roof from a metal profile, it is advisable to arrange a drainage system. At the first stage, gutter holders are fixed to the crate. The edge of the latter should ultimately be located about 3 cm below the edge of the future roof. Otherwise, deformations during snow melting in winter are possible. After the holders are installed, a gutter is inserted into them. Next, a cornice strip is attached to the crate. Its installation is carried out so that the edge of the gutter is blocked. Also, on top of the cornice strip, it will be necessary to bring out the edge of the waterproofing film.
Calculation of a roof from a metal profile
Do-it-yourself metal roofing will be arranged with cost savings in the event that the necessary calculations are made. This plan primarily takes into account:
- The number of elements in a horizontal row. For this, the length of the roof slope is pre-measured. Of course, respectively in the horizontal direction. The resulting figure is divided by the width of the sheet. The overlap length between the elements is also taken into account.
- To calculate the length of the sheets and the number of rows, it is necessary to add the length of the overlap to the length of the slope (vertically), as well as the length of the eaves overhang.
In order to find out how many self-tapping screws will be needed, you need to calculate the area of the future roof and multiply the resulting figure by 6.
Preparation of tools and materials
Before proceeding with the installation of the roof, it is necessary to prepare the tools. At hand should be:
- construction level and plumb;
- scissors for metal or jigsaw, necessary for cutting sheets;
- electric drill;
- pencil and square;
- screwdriver;
- self-tapping screws.
Corrugated board itself must be transported and raised to the roof with maximum accuracy. Otherwise, the protective polymer layer may be damaged.
Installation of sheets on slopes
Now let's see how the roof itself is made from a metal profile with our own hands. Installation of sheets begin from the bottom. They are attached to the crate by self-tapping screws at the bottom of the wave. This will ensure reliable installation. In this case, the overlap must be performed on at least one wave. On one 1m 2 of the roof there should be at least 6-7 self-tapping screws. The horizontal overlap (between the rows) should be about 20 cm.
Pediment cladding
In the calculation of the material necessary for the cladding of the pediment, it is taken into account how it will be laid. The most economical is the horizontal installation method. In addition, in this case, the house will look more aesthetically pleasing. When calculating, it is worth considering that about 10-15% of the material is spent on cutting.
For a pediment, a wall “C” corrugated board is quite suitable. You can also use the material "N" and "NS". After performing heat and waterproofing, a frame of wooden battens is mounted . They will first need to be fixed with a windproof film. The profiled sheet is cut using a hacksaw for metal or a jigsaw.
When arranging a roof from a metal profile, you need to be extremely careful in terms of the possibility of damage to the polymer coating. Otherwise, the service design lines will be significantly reduced, as the elements will begin to rust over time. Therefore, it is not recommended to use a grinder for cutting sheets. Fasten the cut profiled sheet to the frame should start from the bottom corner. All elements are mounted with an overlap.
Mounting the ridge
The metal profile roofing device also includes the installation of a ridge. The joint of the slopes at the top is closed by a ready-made element, which can be purchased simultaneously with the purchase of sheets. The skate is made of the same material as the main elements. It is needed to prevent water from falling under the sheets. Laying in this case should begin to be carried out from the opposite direction of the side winds prevailing in this particular area. Mounted ridge elements with an overlap of 15–20 cm in the ridge with a pitch of 20–30 cm. Self-tapping screws are also used for fastening.
In the event that the angle of inclination of the roof slope is small, a special sealant should be put under the ridge elements, which can also be purchased at a hardware store. A small ventilation gap should remain between him and the ridge.
Endova Installation
When installing a roof from a metal profile, it is necessary, among other things, to correctly install the valleys. In this case, good sealing is very important. Endova is a gutter that enters the internal inclined slope intersections. It is mounted on a continuous crate, arranged on both sides.
Horizontally, the elements are connected with an overlap of 10-15 cm. Joints are necessarily treated with sealant. In order for the end strip to better adjoin the roof, a special self-expanding sealant should be used.
At the moment, it seems more than advisable to use such a modern material as metal profiles to protect the roof. Installation of the roof in this case can be performed in a short time and without the involvement of professionals.
