How to calculate flights of stairs and landings?

When building a house, we often encounter the need to install stairs leading to the upper floor. All dimensions are calculated based on the height to which you must climb. This is the main value that affects all other characteristics. When calculating flights of stairs and platforms even at the planning stage of a house, you get a staircase taking into account all your wishes. If the calculation started after the completion of the construction of the house, then you should proceed from the available free space. This sometimes happens when new owners decide to rebuild an already finished house. But you can always find a way out, the main thing is to do all the calculations first. You can invite professionals and explain to them your ideas. They will evaluate the situation themselves and offer you possible solutions.

For a two- or three-story cottage, where the bedrooms are located on the upper floors, flights of stairs and platforms must be safe. The width of the stairs, the angle of its rise, the railing - everything is selected individually so that the owners, and especially their children, have no problems. If the size and layout of the house allows you to install a single-march straight staircase, you must take this opportunity.

Calculate flights of stairs, the sizes of which are not yet known, based on accepted indicators. For example, the height of the march is the sum of the heights of all risers, and its length is determined by the addition of the width of all steps.

The recommended sizes, which are set out in SNiPs, determine the height of the riser in the range between 15 and 22 cm, and a convenient step width is chosen in the optimal mode in the range of 20 - 27 cm. It is not recommended to make a step less than 15 cm. The only exceptions are the rungs, the narrow edge of which may have a width of 100 mm. Being tied to the height between floors, we calculate flights of stairs and platforms taking into account the clean floor. If the desired value is 260 cm, the riser height is taken equal to 18 cm.

We calculate the number of steps:

We get about 15 pcs. Now let's play a little with the numbers. We take the step width equal to 24 cm. As a result, we get the length of the march 360 cm.

15 x 24 cm = 360 cm.

According to the first indicators, we see that the figure obtained is larger than the free space we have. So, it is necessary to make a new calculation using other numbers.

For example, we have an aperture 180 cm wide and 200 cm long. The recommended width of the stairs is 90 cm, the dimensions of the site are calculated from the width of the stairs. So, we have staircases and platforms with a width of 90 cm. The height of the stairs is 260 cm, the number of steps is 15, which means we get two marches and one platform. To make our task easier, we do the same marches. Let's take them equal, 7 steps each.

7 x 18 = 126 x 2 = 252 cm.

We get the missing height by the first step or platform. With the indicated dimensions, we have a platform of 90 cm x 90 cm when the stairs are rotated 90 degrees and 90 cm x 180 cm if the flight of stairs is turned 180 degrees.

If the space for the stairs is limited, then you can consider the device of a spiral staircase or try to fit in with the help of running steps. The device of wooden stairs in this case will be the most acceptable option. Entrance steps allow you to turn the ladder to the desired degree, while not requiring large areas. The riser height remains unchanged, only the width of the step changes, acquiring a trapezoidal shape. But, thinking about building your house, try to allocate the necessary space for the future stairs to create a project convenient for all family members.
