"The Master and Margarita", Satan's Ball: analysis of the episode, film adaptation of the novel

Mikhail Bulgakov owns the words: "Everyone will be given according to his faith." To more clearly show the interweaving of good and evil in the perishable world, the writer introduced the ball of Satan into the novel "Master and Margarita". The works of Mikhail Afanasevich are inherent in mysticism. But The Master and Margarita is the most mysterious work in history. It still causes controversy between many researchers. The writer was able to combine the legends of Satan, Christian and mystical traditions, and reasonings about God. The central character of the novel is the Devil (Woland). He even had his own retinue. Well, let's try to analyze the episode from “The Master and Margarita” - “The Ball of Satan”.

A brief retelling of the episode

The queen of the ball was Margarita (Margot). She was carefully prepared for this: stripped, doused with blood, given shoes from pale rose petals, put on a royal crown with diamonds. Representatives of the Woland retinue, Koroviev and Behemoth, accompanied her to the ball. So they entered the hall, where everything was flooded with light, music was heard, it smelled of champagne. They approached a huge staircase, on which the guests were to climb. All passing bowed to Margarita. She smiled and spoke kind words.

The Master and Margarita

Who were among the guests at the Master and Margarita? Here you could see killers, warlocks, poisoners, kings, procurators, cheaters, detectives, executioners, suicides. Suddenly Margarita turned her attention to one woman, Frida. She was very restless. Once, being in poverty, she strangled her child with a scarf. After that, she was reminded of this every morning, presenting the same scarf.

After that Margarita circled all the halls to greet the guests. And at 12 o’clock the main meeting came - with Woland. He invited Margot to drink champagne. She was waiting for a reward for agreeing to be the queen of his ball. At this moment, Woland utters his famous words that you do not need to ask anything from the stronger ones, they themselves will be presented.

Woland asks Margarita about her cherished desire. She suddenly remembers Frida and asks that the woman cease to be presented every day with the scarf with which she strangled her son. Woland fulfills her request, but is still directly interested in Margo's personal request. She asks for her Master to be returned to her. He immediately appears in front of her.

Woland asks why he is called the Master? He answers that for the story he wrote about Pontius Pilate. Woland predicts that this novel will still bring many surprises. He pronounces his catchphrase: "Manuscripts do not burn." Woland returns the Master and Margarita to the basement on the Arbat.

Queen Margo

The ball in The Master and Margarita solves the problem of mercy. Even in the form of a witch, Margo retains bright, human qualities. The whole ball is shown through the eyes of the heroine. The Queen’s mission was not easy, but she coped with it with dignity. The fate of her beloved Master, for which she went there, depended on this test. For the love of him, she is ready for anything.

Satan could not do without his assistants. They were Hippopotamus, Azazello, Koroviev, Bassoon. Hippopotamus was preparing Margarita for the ball. He also entertained and encouraged the guests, because he was a werewolf and a great buffoon Woland.

Azazello had a mixed past. He performed all the "black deeds" of the Devil. Baron Meigel was killed by him, lovers were poisoned. This creature does evil in its purest form.

Koroviev was the only person in the retinue of Woland. He was the spirit of hell and the first helper of Satan. These heroes helped Bulgakov show the main mythological picture of the world. Readers see a hidden metaphor for the linkage of life and death.

At the very end of the ball, Woland appears. It is important for him to demonstrate his strength to the ball queen and guests. He is presented with the severed head of Berlioz, he drinks still hot blood. He gave a sip of Margarita, after which all the guests became dust. Despite the demonstration of his power, Satan has an illusory power. Only death and sin obey him. But, as befits a tempter, he is complex and multifaceted.
