A brief history of relationships

Relations between the Soviet Union and the Mexican Republic were established in 1924, but already in 1930 they were severed. They were restored in 1942, that is, in the midst of World War II.

After the resumption of bilateral communication, the Mexican Embassy in Moscow began to establish cooperation at a new level. At the same time, the influence of the USSR on Mexican foreign policy also began to grow. Such a high level of mutual trust was achieved between the countries that in 1973 the president of Mexico, Echeverria, arrived in the Soviet Union for the first time, after which all the rulers, with the exception of de la Madrid, visited Russia.

In the 1970s-1980s relations between countries experienced an unprecedented rise, and the popularity of the Soviet Union was great not only in the circles of the left intelligentsia, but also in the ruling class of the republic. However, the economic crisis in the USSR and the subsequent collapse of the communist system forced the Mexican leadership to make adjustments to its reform program in order to avoid a situation of political transformations that were not supported by real economic indicators.

After the USSR

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the activity of the Mexican embassy in Moscow decreased significantly, as both states were busy solving mainly economic problems. However, in the early 2000s, relations began to recover, and the horizons of cooperation expanded significantly.

After President Putin’s visit to Mexico City, several memoranda of intent were concluded, and the Mexican side declared a desire to begin military-technical cooperation with Russia. But thanks to US intervention, it was limited to the purchase of several test models of MANPADS and a batch of 60 MI-8 and MI-6 helicopters.

Economic cooperation

Mexican Ambassador to Moscow Norma Berta Pensado Moreno has repeatedly stated that economic cooperation between the two countries is a priority for her. This is not surprising, because there really is a lot in common between countries: this is a developing economy and a significant share of raw materials in exports.

However, the Mexican side is interested in Russia primarily as a vast market for ready-to-eat agricultural products and food, although joint projects in the automotive industry are also being announced.

Education and culture

The direction of educational and cultural exchange is a priority for any diplomatic mission, and the Mexican Embassy in Moscow is no exception.

Much attention is paid to promoting Mexican culture in the Russian space, teaching the Spanish language and introducing the local public to the art of the country of Central America. The embassy holds exhibitions annually, translates Mexican books into Russian, and arranges a series of film screenings.

However, the most important area of interaction is considered the academic and scientific exchange between educational institutions of the two countries. Relations between universities are increasingly being established, which allow students of the two countries to attend partner universities.

Address of the Embassy of Mexico in Moscow

In the 1920s, the institution was located in an old mansion in the center of the capital. Later it was decided to transfer the mission to a new building in Bolshoy Levshinsky Lane, 4.

The schedule of the Mexican Embassy in Moscow is standard for the diplomatic mission. It is open from Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00, except for national holidays. Acceptance of documents for a visa is carried out from 9:00 to 11:00.

By the way, it’s worth mentioning this document separately. Russians with a Schengen, American or Canadian visa will not need a Mexican visa if they will arrive and leave the country by plane, and the purpose of the visit is tourism. To do this, you only need to issue an electronic permit. You should also be aware that border guards are entitled to request a return ticket or proof of solvency.
