Foundation waterproofing: some ways

Waterproofing the foundation is one of the most important works in construction, since it is because of it that the building will have good protection against moisture. The importance of waterproofing increases many times if the building has a basement or basement.

Foundation waterproofing
Waterproofing foundations is a fairly responsible job, which requires some knowledge and skills. However, to execute it yourself is quite realistic. The main condition for waterproofing is to comply with all the rules of such a process, since it is rather difficult to repair waterproofing.

If the foundation is stone or brick, then insulation from moisture is laid at a height of about 20 cm above the ground. Waterproofing of foundations is carried out in several ways. All methods that will be described below are the most tested and common in construction.

So, the first way. First, a layer of cement mortar is laid, the thickness of which is about 3 cm, prepared in a ratio of 1: 2. Next, a layer of roofing material is laid. On top of the roofing material, several layers of hot mastic are laid, with a total thickness of up to 10 mm. Next, birch bark is applied in several layers using pine resin, and at the end two layers of roofing material and two layers of bitumen mastic are alternately applied .

Strip foundation waterproofing
The next way that the strip foundation is waterproofed is through vertical waterproofing. This method is used if waterproofing is necessary to protect against penetration of water from the surface of the earth. In this case, the foundation is wrapped with waterproofing material on a bitumen basis along its entire perimeter. If the foundation needs to be protected from capillary liquid, then a layer of insulating material is laid at the place of contact of the brickwork and concrete.

The next method by which the waterproofing of the foundations is carried out is horizontal, which can be carried out in different ways. If the soil on which the building is built is moist, then to protect the foundation from moisture it will be enough to coat it with bituminous material. And if the soil is quite moist, then in this case, using the liquid mastic, the entire foundation must be pasted with waterproofing material. With this method of waterproofing, it is necessary to ensure that the entire surface of the foundation is sufficiently smooth.

Waterproofing Repair
To make the waterproofing of the foundations more reliable, a layer of rubble is poured before laying, which is previously impregnated with bitumen. Instead of bitumen, you can use liquid glass, which does not need further updating, but its cost is much higher.

A modern way to protect the foundation from moisture, rain, melting snow and the like is through waterproofing. In this case, the surface of the foundation is treated with special materials at temperatures above 5 degrees. Such a waterproofing material penetrates deep into the pores of the foundation and crystallizes there. Thus, there will be no cracks and pores in the foundation through which moisture can penetrate.
