1994-1997. First steps
Initially, the company Electronic Arts tried to create a racing simulator, that is, to make the game extremely close to the real car controllability model, excluding any arcade elements. The sound of the lever, controls and behavior of the car - everything was extremely realistic in the first part. Winning tournaments, the player discovered new cars and tracks.
In Need for Speed II, they have already switched to a more arcade technology for car behavior on the highway, and have also relied on a wide variety of exotic cars and concept cars. In the future, almost all parts of NFS adhere to this particular arcade technology.
1998-2002. Series development
Hot Pursuit again took the franchise to a new level and added to the game the police harassment or even the opportunity to play for speed guard, stopping malicious criminals.

If the first simply attracted many with a wide variety of races and the atmosphere of street racing, the second also provided an incredible amount of tuning options for your car, which for some reason was never provided in any other part.
Most Wanted is also, according to many, one of the best, if not the most successful in the entire series. Convenient controls, great atmosphere, exciting chases and plot - all this made the game one of the most successful races in history, as a result of which in 2012 the developer even decided to use the name to create a new game that is very different from the original. The continuation of the storyline is Need for Speed: Carbon.
Pro Street. A unique game about legal racing, providing a lot of opportunities for tuning the car and representing the perfect balance between realism and the arcade. Need for Speed: Shift, made in a similar style, was more focused on realism, which is different from how all parts are made in NFS.
2010-2013. Network conquest
The first attempt to release F2P MMO in the form of Need for Speed: World was not the most successful, and in particular, the reason for this was a huge number of cheaters.
Also in 2010, EA reissued Hot Pursuit, completely updating the control system, betting on colorful drifting when turning and again returning the opportunity to play for the police.
Most Wanted 2012, in addition to the plot, has nothing to do with the single version of the 2005 game, since it is mainly aimed at multiplayer.
Rivals 2013 is very similar in its gameplay to Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, which is why it is by far the last and probably the most popular game in the series.
