The beginning of the twentieth century was marked by terrible events for Russia that violated the music of folk life. In particular, the civil war that began in 1918 led to a clash of people living in the same village, in the same family, which left its imprint on the society and on the artistic work of writers. Most of them repeatedly raised the problems of violence and humanism. The birth of a new life
At the height of the Civil War, the trooper Trofim was confronted with an unpleasant surprise for the entire squadron: his mare was hotels. The foal, unaware of how late he was born, first looked around the world around him, feeling both the horror of what he saw and the inescapable sweetness emanating from motherly affection. The horse herself was lying near the dunghill, thin, gaunt, but with genuine joy and pride in her eyes. It was such a picture that Trofim saw in front of him, going up to the stable. And froze in confusion, since nothing else but to get rid of the foal was not possible during this turbulent time. This is the beginning of the story. Next, we consider its summary.
Sholokhov foal and his fate worried no less than Trofim. The latter was expected by a long conversation with the squadron commander, the result of which was a firm decision to kill the sucker immediately. Otherwise, on the eve of the attack on the White Guards, he will become a thorough hindrance, and the mare will not succumb to the orders of the owner. Trofim was aware of the severity of the situation, but his hand did not rise on a small and innocent animal. The squadron entered the situation and allowed to leave everything as it was for the time being, motivating it with the fact that "... and the commander sucked a tick, and we sucked, since this is the custom, well, the Sabbath." So the foal remained in the squad.
Sholokhov, a summary of the battle episode
A month later, Trofim's Ekadron entered into battle with the Cossack army. It turned out that the mare is completely disobeying the instructions of its owner, since it primarily seeks to protect its cub. Angry enough, the breeder sent a rifle at him, but the bullets did not cause any harm or death to the descendant of the red mare. After the incident, the commander again spoke with Trofim about the elimination of the foal, since he alone panic leads to the ranks. However, to kill his hand did not rise. "Foal": a dangerous crossing
Soon, the regiment was forced to swim across the Don in order to escape from the White Guards. Trofim entrusted his mare to a platoon, and he himself transported saddles on a boat. He did not lose sight of his redhead for a minute. Next to her, "sometimes it was thrown high out of the water, sometimes dipping so that the nostrils were barely visible" and her cub. And here the author describes a scene that made everyone shudder. We give a brief summary of it. A ringing call slashed Trofim's heart. “I'll kill you!” - this was the first thought flashed in his head. She forced to grab a rifle and aim at the head of an unfortunate drowning animal. Fortunately, the conductor missed. Then he resolutely jumped into the water and swam to the foal. At that moment, the White Guard officer standing on the shore and seeing everything gave the command: “Do not shoot!” Making tremendous efforts, Trofim pulled the foal ashore, where the latter immediately fell under the protection of his red mother.
