Igor Dmitrievich was born in a simple family of a miner in the Voroshilovgrad region on April 20 in 1938. With a newborn son, parents move to Makeevka (now Donetsk region, Ukraine).

In 1955, the future Marshal of the Russian Federation graduated from high school with a gold medal and entered the Moscow State University. But since childhood, he dreamed of becoming a sailor. Having collected the documents, he moved to Leningrad to enter the naval school. When Igor Dmitrievich was in his second year, the profile of his faculty was changed to engineering and transferred to Sevastopol. In 1960, he received a diploma (specialty "Missile Equipment Control Systems") and continued military service in the missile forces.

In 1997, on November 21, Igor Dmitrievich was awarded the highest rank of “Marshal of the Russian Federation”. He was the first and so far the only person awarded such an honor. In subsequent years, he was an assistant to the president of the Russian Federation (since 2001), since 2005 he is president of the Club of Military Leaders of the Russian Federation.

Last days

Igor Dmitrievich liked to speak to the honors pupils of the Nakhimov and Suvorov schools, which were collected for the award of scholarships. In August 2006, he addressed them for the last time. Then he was already very sick, moved with difficulty and spoke only in a whisper. Young fighters were warned that the only Russian marshal in Russia came to meet them. And how he went to them - without a stick, with a smile on his face. He said a few words so that everyone thought he was just a little hoarse.

The same year, November 10, Sergeyev Igor Dmitrievich was gone. In memory of him, the school where he studied was named after him, a museum and a plaque were opened, and in 2008 a monument was erected to this great man.
