Cat claw removal - is there an alternative?

Cats and cats have instincts in nature, forcing them to sharpen their claws on a horizontal or vertical surface. In nature, animals most often use tree trunks for this. Living in the house, they, naturally, will find for themselves the corresponding item, often, according to the owners, completely unsuitable for this: an armchair, sofa or bedside table. To avoid damage to furniture, some cat owners take extreme measures - removing the claws of cats or cats. However, it should be understood: this operation is far from harmless, and in some cases even dangerous.

To save cats from claws, they remove the first phalanges on each of the fingers. During and after the operation, the animals experience severe pain. Removal of claws in cats and cats is carried out under general anesthesia - the animal will leave after it for several hours. Recovering, it can begin to randomly move, trying to jump and fall on its paws - as a result, the wounds begin to bleed. The legs heal for a long time and painfully: at best, the animal will begin to rely on them in a day. For several days in a row, you will have to put on a special collar around the neck that does not allow the cat to reach its paws (in order to avoid licking of the seams). She will stop limping only after a week. Only a young and healthy animal can safely transfer this operation, therefore, if you have not removed the claws of a kitten, an adult cat should not do the operation.

Having decided on surgical intervention, pay attention to the choice of clinic and veterinarian. An unsuccessful claw removal in cats is fraught with serious complications: severe inflammation, ostomyelitis, as well as impaired motor function. In the latter case, the animal will be afraid to lean on its paws, although a lot of time has passed since the operation. It is assumed that he has the so-called phantom pains, when the remote phalanx seems to hurt. This assumption has not yet been proved, however, the fact is clear: the movements of the animal can change forever, and you will not be able to fix it. Therefore, deciding to remove the claws of a cat or cat, think a thousand times whether it is worth doing. In extreme cases, remove the claws only on the front legs - most often this is enough to ensure that the animal does not cause trouble to others.

An alternative could be a claw point: if you teach your animal to sharpen its claws in a certain place, your problems will be solved by themselves. Before attaching it, observe the actions of the cat. Find out if she prefers to scratch horizontal or vertical surfaces, which material is more to her liking. Depending on this, you can buy a clawcloth or make it yourself - for example, from a piece of wood covered with carpet. A good effect gives clipping claws. For the first time, it is better to contact a veterinarian for this, and subsequently you can cut the claws of the pet yourself. It should be noted that not all cats and cats will behave calmly during such a procedure - you may need the help of another person. However, no matter how negative your pet may be about this action, it is certainly much less traumatic than the removal of claws in cats and cats.

There is another way to keep the furniture intact and protect yourself from scratches: special silicone pads that are worn on the animal on each claw - they can be purchased at pet stores. In most cases, these measures are sufficient. It should also be understood: the removal of claws in cats and cats can completely change their character, and an affectionate animal will become vicious - instead of claws, it will use its teeth.

From all that has been said, one can conclude: removing an animal’s claws is probably only if it aggressively and often attacks others, especially small children. First, you should try to wean the cat to rush at people, and only if these measures have not yielded results, decide on removal.
