Basement water pump: overview, features, selection

One of the important devices for giving is a pump for pumping water out of the basement. After all, it often creates a huge number of problems that can negatively affect the structure located above it. All this with poor care can cause enormous damage to your property. It is worth saying that a similar problem can extend not only to private sectors with basements, but also to multi-unit urban houses.

Why is water causing trouble?

Most often, problems arise in basements due to reasons such as:

  • thawed liquid;
  • lack of accounting for the depth of water;
  • precipitation;
  • no drainage system;
  • the building is located on a slope.

Basement water pump
Therefore, you need a pump to pump water from the basement in the presence of the above factors. In addition to it, the liquid can be removed by other improvised means.

How to pump out water?

The method using improvised devices is very complex, lengthy and time-consuming. That is why it is better to use a pump for pumping dirty water, so you will do everything much faster and without extra effort. In this case, it is very important to choose the right device. The types of pumps are different. For example, drainage structures are appropriate if the pumped water has a minimum of impurities. But fecal pumps can be used to get rid of liquids of varying degrees of pollution.

Types of fecal equipment

Self priming pump
The pump for pumping water from the basement of this type also has its own modifications. There are four main groups:

  • The most budgetary fecal pumps that are used for cold drains. They do not have a grinding device. Best used for storm or drainage.
  • Installations for cleaning sewers with high temperature of drains without a grinder. They are used for bath and shower rooms, as well as for waste from the operation of washing and dishwashers.
  • Pumps with a grinder for cold drain. They are used in most sewers, taking into account temperatures up to 40 degrees.
  • The most expensive are devices with a grinder for hot drains. Used for bath complexes, public spaces with high humidity. For private households, they are practically not used due to their high cost.

Classification by installation type

Each pump for pumping water from the basement differs from the other in the installation method, not only for its intended purpose.

Pump types
For example, surface-type plants can be used in pumping sewer stations or cesspools. They are mounted on the surface, and a suction pipe is placed in the drains, while the lifting depth is 4 meters maximum.

A submersible pump for pumping water has good pressure properties, some models can pump effluents with a depth of up to 100 meters. In terms of layout, they are divided into vertical and horizontal, install them at the bottom of the settlers, using guides. Today, it is precisely such designs that are most in demand on the market.

Also recently, a semi-submersible model is gaining more and more popularity. It is placed at the top of the drain using float systems. The device of this type of pump does not imply the presence of a grinder, therefore the scope of its application is limited. Most often they are used in sediment or groundwater storage .

Differences of the fecal pump from the drain

The design of the fecal (sewer) type is always equipped with a grinder that can grind contaminants and turn them into a homogeneous mass.

Drainage pumps for pumping water
And drainage pumps for pumping water, which, as mentioned above, are submersible and surface, must be selected depending on the depth. Submersible structures are very easy to install, the main thing is to properly ground them and choose a hose that matches their length and diameter.

Features of self-priming structures

In order to equip a good system of water supply of an autonomous type in a country house or a suburban area, it is best to choose products of a special type. Such a self-priming pump can lift water from a depth at a small distance from the point of intake, passing through it.

Dirty water pump
There are many models and modifications of products of this type on the market, while for domestic use, you should definitely familiarize yourself with them. Indeed, some types of pumps may be suitable in one case or another, but not in another.

Quite often they include a membrane or storage tank in the kit. Such equipment is considered a complete pumping station.

Classification

Self-priming pump can be equipped with a built-in or remote ejector. In this design, the liquid rises during discharge. Ejector pumps are very noisy, so they are recommended to be placed away from living quarters. However, their key advantage is that they can lift water from depths of the order of 10 meters. The feed pipe is lowered into the source of the fence, and the pump itself is also placed nearby. Such a layout of the installation will make it easy to control its operation.

Submersible pump for pumping water
The second type of self-priming pump is without an ejector. The fluid here rises through the use of a hydraulic device with several stages. Such constructions do not emit noise, but are inferior to the first form in terms of the depth of the fence.

When using a self-priming unit, it is very important to install protection against dry running, otherwise it may break.

Differences of centrifugal structures from vortex

The pump for pumping water out of a centrifugal cellar is equipped with a spiral casing. A wheel based on disks with blades is rigidly fixed on it. They are bent to the sides opposite to the direction of the main movement. The pump is connected to the pipeline by means of a pipe with the desired diameter.

Centrifugal units can have several impellers, but this does not affect the principle of operation. In any case, the fluid will move under the action of a force arising from rotation.

Vortex pumps are designed for pumping both water itself and mixtures based on liquids and air.

Pump device
Oxygen is sucked into the housing due to vacuum, and then everything is mixed. When both components of the mixture fall into the working chamber, they are separated from each other due to their differences in terms of densities. Air flows through the supply line, and the water is recycled. Then oxygen is removed through the suction line, and the housing is filled with liquid. After that, the pump starts to do its job.

How to choose an installation?

For a product such as a pump for pumping water, the price is not the most important factor for choosing (the cost can be from 2 thousand rubles for the simplest models and above). Be sure to check before buying under what conditions it can be used. In particular, find out the depth of the sump, then to determine the pressure. Productivity will depend on the volume of effluents, and attention should also be paid to this.

When buying a pump of the most common submersible type for cottage needs, consider the following:

  • The body of the product should be made of cast iron, steel or plastic, it is also good when it contains sealing seals that are resistant to chemical influences.
  • If you want to buy a pump with a grinder, then its quality should be paid special attention. Be sure to see how the impeller of the structure, which is used as a cutting element, looks like. Many experts recommend choosing those models where a special knife is installed on it. Thanks to this, better work productivity is provided, and you can also pump more storm and fecal effluents. If there is no such knife on the pump, but there is just a sharpened edge, its price will be lower, but some components will become more difficult to grind.
  • Pay attention to the power of the installation. It is better to choose those models that for this parameter have a margin of at least 30 percent. Thanks to this, the pump will be able to work normally in almost any situation and not be overloaded. In addition, it will significantly increase its service life.
  • If you want the installation to work automatically, you need to choose models equipped with built-in control systems. Their feature is that they begin to function independently when the level of sewage in your sump reaches a certain indicator. All of this works very simply and does not require expensive repairs or maintenance. But experts nevertheless recommend not to save when buying models of this type and to prefer products of famous brands, rather than dubious cheap devices of unknown origin.

Also, one must not forget that regardless of the selected model and its modification and type, the efficiency of the pump depends not only on all of the above, but also on its installation. It is also impossible to save on it, it’s better to do it yourself when you have experience in this matter. In other cases, it is better to entrust this type of activity to specialized specialists.

Saving on installing a pump for pumping waste water is not worth it. Thanks to this decision, you will save yourself from the need to call a sewage machine. And even the most expensive installation can pay off in just a couple of seasons.
