It has long been noticed that any room, even with a very modest decoration of the walls, floor, ceiling and cheap furniture, can be made cozy and admirable by hanging a tulle with lambrequins. With your own hands, every woman with sewing skills and successful patterns can make such a design.
A bit about tulle
Under this name, transparent net cotton, semi-silk or other fabric is known.
Tulles are:
- plain and color;
- smooth and patterned;
- made from natural or artificial fiber.
Smooth tulle is produced on special machines from two systems of threads. It is used for the manufacture of elegant lingerie and the tailoring of evening clothes, as well as the basis for piece embroidered products.
Tulle patterned (curtain) is produced on lace machines. It is widely used for sewing home textiles such as curtains, wraps and bedspreads.
Tulle for window decoration
It is known that curtains to protect premises from the penetration of sunlight, mosquitoes, midges and other winged insects have been used since the time of the Egyptian pharaohs. Later they learned to drape beautifully, and during the Renaissance, velvet and tulle with lambrequins began to be used. They combined perfectly with lush tassels, grabs and beautiful cornices, creating a luxurious design for window and doorways.
What are lambrequins
Such a detail of interior knitwear is a horizontal decorative drapery located at the top of a complex curtain, window opening or door. It occupies the entire width of the cornice and, as a rule, is made of dense fabric with pleating, set on a bandeau lining, or without it (“soft” version). Quite often, combined options are used, sewn from several types of fabric.
Lambrequin can be decorated with additional decorative elements in the form of shuttlecocks, brushes and cutouts in the form of teeth or semicircles. It can be symmetrical or have an abstract design with any contour.

Since the living room is the main room in the house, they are especially responsible for its design. This fully applies to the decoration of window openings.
If this is the first experience in tailoring stylish curtains with a lambrequin, it is not recommended to overestimate your strength and choose options with complex drapery.
General instruction
Tulle with lambrequins (photo for the hall, see below) can be any color. It is chosen depending on the gamut used to design this room as a whole.
The work is organized in the following sequence:
- They fix a bar above the window opening, which will serve as the basis for the curtains. The installation location of this part is placed above the frame by 10 cm, and the length is made such that it exceeds the width of the window opening by a maximum of 15 centimeters.
- If you are going to sew an option on the lining fabric, then it is cut using a pattern. Then, on a sewing machine, the base material is sewn to it. The lining is sewn so that the upper edge of the decorative curtains is not touched, since the sewn material will have to be twisted.
- Ready-made window decoration elements are mounted on an already installed base in the very center. A furniture stapler is a good helper for this. The free ends of the lambrequin are spread along the entire length of the cornice and fixed in the right places.

How to calculate fabric consumption per curtain

First we find out the consumption of tulle and a more dense decorating fabric, if it is assumed that the complex curtain will consist of three vertical parts and a lambrequin.
In order to make a calculation, it is necessary to determine the type of braid and the width of the cornice. Their ratio can be 2: 1, 1.5: 1 or 3: 1. Suppose you are using tulle with lambrequins for the kitchen, where the cornice has a width of 130 cm. Then it is better to choose a 2: 1 ratio. In other words, you need to purchase a tulle with a width of 260 + 10 cm. “Additive” is needed here in order to align the edges, and to hem the sides.
As for the consumption of more dense tissue hanging on the sides, two options are possible:
- In an unbound form, it can cover the entire tulle. Then the flow should be the same as for a transparent fabric + 10 cm.
- Dense fabric can hang over the tulle, leaving it open in the middle. Its tissue consumption will be 1/3 less.
- As for how much textiles will be used for the manufacture of lambrequin, it depends on the pattern.
Integrated curtain height
The width of the tulle and curtains is standard (2.8-3 m). Thus, the height of the curtain does not affect the consumption of tissue, however, consider it. Most often, those who choose tulle with lambrequins to decorate an apartment prefer that after hanging on the ledge it reaches the floor. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the width of the braid, which can be equal to 2.5-10 cm, since any of its looped rows can be used for fastening to the cornice. In addition, you need to consider that for bending the curtains from below, you need to leave about 5 cm.
How to adjust the machine to sew curtains
Tulle with lambrequins will look presentable only if the work is done accurately and efficiently. To do this, first of all, you need to adjust the sewing machine, setting the appropriate tension of the lower and upper threads. You can pick it up by trial and error, using a double fold of a tulle flap.
In addition, the quality of the stitch is greatly influenced by the thread, which should be thin, strong and elastic. As for the color, it is better to choose it in the tone of the fabric or one shade darker.
Be sure to change the needle of the sewing machine to a new, thin one, as its dull end will pull the threads or leave traces of punctures.
The stitch will not tighten the tulle if the stitch has a length of not less than 3-5 mm. It is also recommended to set the height of the teeth so that they advance the tissue without collecting it from the needle.
To prevent this, some craftswomen pull the edge of the curtain when sewing on a typewriter. This is fraught with the fact that the needle may break, tearing or scratching the fabric, or the edge of the tulle will stretch, and ugly “waves” will appear on the sides, which will be difficult to remove.
