Shabby Chic: do it yourself with your own hands

Great time has come for flea market buffs: shebby chic is in fashion again. With your own hands in this style you can recreate truly unique things, the main thing is to learn a few rules.

Where did that come from?

Any designer will say that, despite its essence, shabby chic is truly a young direction. It owes its appearance to the Englishwoman Rachel Ashwell, a big lover of antiques. It was they who inspired the original designer to selflessly use the decoupage technique. As a result, objects appeared that later became classics in the style of “shabby chic”: furniture and utensils were distinguished by delicate, pastel colors, shrouded in a light fleece of attrition. By the way, thanks to the latter, the direction got its name - Shabby Chic.

Recognize and implement

So what distinguishes from many other shabby chic? First of all, the presence of antiquity. Moreover, the thing may be completely new, but when using special methods, it is brought into a vintage state, so characteristic of the Shebby-chic style. With their own hands, people "age" caskets, chests of drawers, shelves, tables, chairs and much more with the help of a game of paints, varnishes and, of course, decoupage art.

It is worth noting that when designing a room in the style of “shabby chic” with your own hands, you should adhere to a single idea, such as Provence or Baroque. And therefore, the images of the village landscape, the drawings in the spirit of "jui", floral motifs - this is exactly what is required to emphasize the "shabby chic". How to do it? Of course, use a special technique, partially modified by the founder. Another distinguishing feature of this trend is its color palette. As a rule, the interior and its objects are painted in pastel shades: milky, pink, yellow, blue and others. In this case, tones can be used either cold or warm. Mixing them is unacceptable.

Shabby Chic Decoupage

For those who own decoupage equipment, it will be easy to perceive the laws dictated by this area. First of all, it is worth mastering two basic techniques - “crackle” and “candle method”.

Krakle is a peculiar way to leave cracks on things. The easiest method to perform this procedure is to use craquelures - special varnishes that “cause” the paint just applied to crack.

The “Candle Method” aims to create artificial scuffs directly in the manufacture of a new item or restoration acquired in the ranks of junk collectors. For example, a box still smelling of fresh wood is primed and painted in milk color. Next, along the protruding edges, a candle or other wax object is passed, after which the entire surface is painted with a different color.

As soon as the second layer dries, it is removed from the candle-treated areas. It looks like a natural scuff.

In addition to these two methods, volume decoupage and its shadow variety are widespread. By the way, the founder of this style herself does not insist on an external manifestation of the antiquity of furniture or services. The main thing is that they blow from the spirit of antiquity.

As you can see, in the style of "shabby chic" with your own hands you can create not only individual objects, but also the whole interior. The main thing is not to go beyond the framework that subtly distinguishes between shabby and glamorous vintage.
