Sometimes there are situations when, for successful treatment of a child, the doctor prescribes intramuscular administration of certain drugs. For help, you can contact a nurse or acquaintances. However, it is better if you yourself master these skills and will know how to correctly inject the child. After all, it is not always possible to invite a doctor, and an injection is necessary.
In order to give an injection to a child, the following items will be required:
- cotton wool or a small piece of bandage;
- a disposable syringe of the required capacity, by the way, in pharmacies special syringes are sold for children, which differ in a thinner needle;
- an injectable drug corresponding to the prescribed dosage. To avoid unpleasant situations, be sure to check its expiration date;
- medical alcohol, vodka or alcohol wipes for injection.
Preparation for intramuscular injection
In order to give an injection to a child, you need to follow some simple, but at the same time important rules:
- Wash hands with a disinfectant or soap, or wipe them with alcohol.
- An injection should be made into the gluteal muscle. To get to the right place, the buttock must be visually divided into four equal parts and put the injection in the upper outer corner.
- It is most difficult to give injections to young children, so during the procedure it is necessary to maintain calm and confidence.
- In the event that the necessary preparation is in a liquid state, it is necessary to make an incision at the site of the ampoule breaking with a nail file, which is sold together with the solution, and then open it. After that, unpack the syringe, connect to the needle and fill with the drug.
- If the drug is in dry form, then it is diluted with a special solution recommended by the doctor.
- The syringe must be placed with the needle up and tap on it with your finger so that all the bubbles rise to the very top. After that, it is necessary to press on the piston of the syringe, squeezing all the air out. When performed correctly, a drop should form at the tip of the needle, which should be removed with an alcoholized cotton swab.

Before
injecting the child, massage the buttocks with gentle, non-quick movements, and keep your hands warm. The place where the needle will be inserted must be treated with an alcohol wad.
At this time, with one hand, you need to fold a part of the buttocks into a fold, and with the other - hold a syringe. Insert the needle with a sharp movement, while observing an angle of 90 °. In this case, place the thumb on the piston, and hold the syringe with the middle and index fingers. The slower you take the medicine, the better. There should be no rush in this matter. When the medicine is over, use cotton-wool to squeeze the place of contact between the needle and the body and with a sharp movement remove the syringe. After this, you can massage the injection site a little.
It is difficult to put injections in the ass for children, since they are terribly afraid of them. Therefore, you don’t need to put medicine in the syringe or sprinkle its remains in front of the child - this will scare him even more. Also, do not pretend that you yourself are nervous. If the child starts to break out and cry, do not scold him, on the contrary, try to distract and calm somehow. And no need to deceive the baby, telling him that it will not hurt. It is better to praise him for being so brave and able to endure this procedure.
