History of the memorial

There were no fights during the Great Patriotic War near Sochi itself. But since August 1941, endless trains with wounded soldiers have been reaching here. According to contemporaries, for 4 years the resort has turned into a city of white robes.

The Zavokzalny memorial complex was built on the site of the old (Zavokzalnoy) city cemetery. It was here that the bodies of soldiers who died in hospitals were buried. In the 1950s, the cemetery was closed. The remains of soldiers in 1956 were exhumed from single and group graves and reburied in 74 mass graves. In 1974, the cemetery was completely liquidated.
