The tricky question of who invented electricity

There is no answer to the question of who invented electricity. It was impossible to do, because it objectively exists in nature. Another question is who gave the name to the directed movement of charged particles and the energy obtained as a result of it. This was done by William Gilbert, describing in his scientific work dated 1600, the results of his own research with amber. The scientist rubbed pieces of this hardened resin on the fabric, why they acquired the ability to attract various light objects, and since the name of this beautiful mineral in Greek sounds like an electron, they began to call the open phenomenon a consonant word.

who invented electricity

But to say that Gilbert invented electricity, of course, is impossible. Actually, its priority in determining the properties of amber is not entirely correct, given that Thales in ancient Greece also rubbed it on the wool. However, unlike the English scientist who lived in the XV-XVI centuries, he did not conclude that our entire planet behaves like a giant magnet, and about its bipolar nature. So the great researcher Gilbert took a giant step in the direction of energy research, which later became one of the main driving forces of progress, without which it is impossible to imagine modern civilization.

There is an ancient saying: to name correctly means to understand correctly. In a sense, the question of who invented electricity remains open, his research continues.

invented electricity

Particularly rapid development of electrical engineering took place in the eighteenth century. Peter van Mushenbrook created the world's first energy storage device - the Leiden Bank, a prototype of modern batteries.

The story of the discovery of electricity and its properties is continued by Benjamin Franklin, the president of the United States, whose face is known to everyone from the image on the hundred-dollar bill. It was he who became the first theorist of new science, and also the inventor of the lightning rod.

Simmer introduced the concept of the pole into electrical engineering. Almost simultaneously in Italy, Galvani sets up bold experiments with the muscle tissues of animals, exposing them to current.

electricity discovery story
If anyone invented electricity, then this is Volt, who at the turn of the 19th century constructed a battery, the principle of which is widely used to this day, and will certainly be applied as long as humanity exists.

Faraday paved the way for all devices that use the principle of induction - electromagnets, electric motors, transformers, retracting coils and many other elements of modern technical devices. Over the course of two decades, he, as well as Ampere and Maxwell, have made several discoveries equivalent to a real scientific revolution.

A fundamental discovery was Joseph Thomson's definition of an electron as a material carrier of electricity. It happened in 1879.

The expression "pay for the light" is used quite often. In this sense, one of those who invented electricity was our compatriot Lodygin, who developed the much-needed thing, like a light bulb, and sold the patent to Thomas Edison in 1906.
