Given that crocheted napkins are a classic of needlework, it is not surprising that almost all beginner knitters try to make them. The usual round beautiful napkins (crochet) are unusually in demand, however, products of a square, oval and hexagonal shape are no less popular.
Types of square napkins
Like any others, napkins having a square shape can consist of:
- From one major motive with harness.
- Of several motifs with a common border.
- From a grid with a binding.
Border, that is, a narrow openwork strip running along the edge of the product, is an indispensable element of napkins and tablecloths. It distinguishes an independent product from a motive designed to connect with other elements. Almost all
schemes of square napkins (crocheted ) are designed so that the edge ends with a strapping that gives the product a neat and complete look.
How to knit a simple square napkin
The photo below shows a small square motif.
Its use is universal: a fragment can be used to create small napkins with a crochet or craft one large one by connecting several identical elements. In the latter case, the tying is framed by a typesetting canvas.
In order to get an independent product, you need to follow the proposed scheme, and when the motive is connected, complete all five rows of strapping. The finished napkin is used to decorate flat surfaces or as a stand for a hot cup. To give rigidity, it can be treated with a solution of PVA, gelatin or starch. Small beautiful napkins (crocheted) look good, playing the role of hot coasters. They can be laid out in different places. To create napkins, you need to connect several motives. A great addition to the kit will be one large napkin with the same pattern.
Large square napkin
As mentioned above, large patterns of square napkins (crocheted) can include either one large or several small motifs. The following diagram illustrates the execution sequence of a rather large product consisting of a single fragment.
The central element is made in the form of four "pineapples", diverging in different directions. This pattern is very convenient for expanding the paintings, which is why schemes of square napkins crocheted connected with such details are so common.
A characteristic feature of large napkins is the use of several levels of strapping. In the given example, the first level is small “pineapples” going in a row, the second is a neat openwork strapping that completes the product.
Crochet napkin lessons : how to increase the size of the product
Often a situation arises in which it is necessary to increase or, conversely, reduce the area of a knitted napkin. The pattern chosen by the knitter can fully meet her requirements regarding the pattern, but not the right size. Of course, the search for another pattern of square napkins (crochet) becomes a natural solution. However, do not rush. If the composition contains the same arrangement of elements as the scheme of the large napkin described in the previous paragraph, there are ways to remove or add several rows.
If necessary, increase the canvas, you can repeat its elements. It will be most convenient to perform an intermediate border (small “pineapples”) not one, but two or more times. The diagram already contains the correct extension, so do not worry that the border does not fit and the canvas will be deformed. The pattern will have the same appearance, just the number of “pineapples” along the edges of the square will be larger.
You can also achieve the expansion of the napkin by knitting additional rows of mesh. In this case, the product will get a more openwork and airy look. In any case, the final border should be done only once, as in the original napkin scheme.
Web reduction
In a similar way, the opposite effect is performed: they remove some elements of the napkin and reduce its area. You can remove the same components that in the previous paragraph recommend adding:
- Stripe pattern.
- Strip of mesh.
There are schemes where the elements are not arranged in circular stripes, but go from the center to the outer edge.
Unfortunately, changing the size of these napkins is a thankless task. As a result of painful efforts, you can get a shapeless product with disturbed proportions of the ornament.
A few words about yarn
Traditionally, thin cotton thread of light shades is used to make napkins. The thinner the yarn, the more accurate and elegant the product will look. The thickness of 500-600 m / 100 grams can be considered optimal. Do not be afraid that this thread will be very difficult to work with. A napkin is a small product, so its production will not take too much time.
