Embossing on the skin has recently become a fairly popular type of needlework that you can do at home. Thanks to him, you can decorate various leather products: notebooks, belts, bags and even shoes. It is produced by special presses. Embossing can be hot and cold. Despite only two methods of finishing the skin, a lot of decor options can be found. The procedure is used for applying logos and even for painting pictures. Mostly gift items are decorated at home in this way.
Small presses are usually used for work. At home, a hammer and other tools are often used. However, one must be careful not to spoil the base.
Hot stamping on the skin is used to apply a pattern to the base, which has a thickness of 1.5-3 mm. The drawing is applied using a hot cliche. Metal stamps or other tools can play the role of such an instrument, so you can do this art at home.
Such a procedure can be blind and hot stamping. In blind embossing, only stamp and leather are used. No additional elements are needed. The finished drawing is obtained as if pressed into the base. The quality of the print will depend on the efforts that will be applied to the tool.
Embossing on the skin of relief type gives the opposite effect, that is, the pattern is convex. To apply the pattern, a counter matrix and a matrix are used. During the procedure, you can apply various paints.
If the stamps do not heat up, cold stamping is performed. This procedure makes it possible to make drawings on
thin skin (thickness 0.8-1.2 mm). Basically, the pattern is obtained by compressing the base between the matrix and its counterpart.
Gold stamping is very popular, that is, foil is used for work in addition to the press. Naturally, the pattern can be obtained not only in gold, since the spectrum of colors of the foil has expanded significantly.
The embossing on the skin in this way is done in the same way as blind, only foil is additionally applied to the surface of the skin. Naturally, this affects the depth of the impression (small). For such embossing, the press must be heated. During the pressing of the skin, the separation layer of the foil is melted, and the metal layer, due to the pressure, is transferred to the drawing.
The foil for this type of embossing must be of high quality. How well the metallized layer adheres to the print depends on the quality and thickness of the adhesive layer. In addition to metallized foil, in our time, you can use color, glossy or matte, as well as holographic foil. It must be resistant to ultraviolet, chemicals, abrasion and mechanical damage. Naturally, the foil should not deteriorate when exposed to temperature. However, sometimes it happens that the print of the foil does not remain on the relief, but on the stamp. Therefore, foil stamping must be carefully prepared.
