Net Weight and Gross Weight

The words "net" and "gross" are now firmly established in the Russian language. It is unlikely that anyone does not know what these "newcomers" from Italy mean.

The word "net" in the translation sounds like "clean." In the combination of "net weight" it has a semantic load as "net weight, without packaging or packaging." Actually, at this stage, usually the knowledge about the borrowed word from the average person ends.

But if we consider not the combination of "net weight", but, for example, the expression "net income", then the conclusion suggests itself: net income, that is, net profit calculated by subtracting from the gross income all costs and investments, as well as the cost of raw materials if the conversation is about production.

Sometimes in the phrase "net weight" the word "weight" is replaced by the word "price". Then the expression means the final price from which all possible discounts have already been calculated, or discounts on this product were not provided at all.

net weight

Typically, the net weight is indicated on top of the product packaging. This is done for the convenience of consignors at points of sale and forwarders. Having unloaded the machine with boxes, they don’t need to drag them onto the scales, release them from packaging and outweigh, losing time and effort. It is enough just to pay attention to the label pasted on top.

The word "gross" is the antonym of "net." It also came to us from Italy. But it is already translated as "rude, unclean." Gross weight means the total, total weight of the product, along with packaging or packaging. Often this data is recorded on labels.

To the unlit, such scrupulousness may seem unnecessary. Who needs this total weight when receiving goods? After all, the packaging will still be disposed of, because it will not be sold to customers!

net and gross mass

However, it is necessary to know the gross weight for those who transport large quantities of goods. Even an ordinary cookie box pulls out 400 or even 600 grams on a scale! Having loaded 100 such boxes into the vehicle, the machine receives 40 kg of load, which varies with the indicated net weight of the goods transported.

And if the goods are delivered to a large supermarket, where do you need to import 1000 boxes of weight candies, gingerbread cookies and cookies? 400 kg of unaccounted packing material can overload a car above the prescribed level, which is fraught with breakdowns and accidents. And if you do not take into account the weight of wooden or polypropylene containers, which can make a difference of a ton or more?

And also the net and gross mass is necessary for utilizers. Knowing these data, as well as the number of units received, they do not need to outweigh the empty containers in order to find out its weight. It is enough to make simple calculations - subtract the total net weight from the total gross weight - and the resulting figure will indicate how many containers have accumulated in the warehouse.

net weight is

You can multiply the difference between gross and net of one commodity unit by the quantity - the result will be the same. Again, there is a saving in effort and time.

The question arises as to why the utilizer needs to know the weight of the used packaging. Firstly, in order to select the necessary transport capacity. Secondly, cardboard, paper, polypropylene and polyethylene can be handed over to the recycling center and help out a certain amount.

So, net weight is the net weight of the goods without packaging, which should be known to the forwarders and receivers of the goods. Gross weight is the total weight of the cargo transported, which should be known to truckers. And the difference between these two data is of interest to utilizers.
