At a minimum, to identify the device. If someone steals the phone, the owner will be able to contact the police. Those, in turn, will be able to find the stolen phone by checking its IMEI. What do all these numbers mean?
Serial number can be 11-20 characters. Most often, these are 15 digits, which mean the following:

They will simply personally check the IMEI phones of people who they think are suspicious. The likelihood that in this way they can specifically find your phone is small.
