When trying to use a connection to Wi-Fi-based wireless networks, mobile gadget owners sometimes encounter a problem that the device writes for some unknown reason: "An authentication error has occurred." Also, sometimes authentication error messages may be displayed, the message “Obtaining an IP address” constantly hangs on the screen, etc. How to fix such problems will be shown later. Looking ahead, it is worth saying that mobile devices are not always directly related to the appearance of such troubles, and the root cause lies in the incorrectly set parameters of routers. Next, consider troubleshooting for home users, and not for open networks that may be available, say, in cafes, restaurants or airports.
Authentication failed: how to understand this?
In general, the appearance of such a message indicates that when connecting to a wireless network, it was impossible to control (compare) the user key entered by the user with the one set for the network on the router. But this is far from the main reason.
The message that an authentication error has occurred may also be issued by Samsung devices or some other devices due to the fact that the coding (encryption) systems of the information may not exactly match. As you know, this technique is used to prevent attackers from gaining access to transmitted and received information in order to use it in their own interests.
Finally, the most commonplace situation of a failure with a notification to the user that an authentication error occurred during connection may be due to a weak signal (the capabilities of routers are limited mainly by a range of about 100-300 meters in direct visibility).
Based on the foregoing, we will take appropriate measures, but with regard exclusively to home conditions.
What if a WiFi authentication error occurs in the first place?
So, the very first thing that is usually recommended to be done in such situations is to completely reboot all used devices, at least somehow connected to the network (routers, phones and tablets). If a weak signal is observed, just go closer to the router and check the connection.
Entering the password correctly and changing it on the router
Quite often, a message appears stating that a WiFi authentication error has occurred, a Samsung device, or any other, can also be issued due to the usual carelessness of the user who entered the incorrect password to access the network.
In this case, it is recommended to check the combination installed on the router, and if necessary, change it. To do this, enter the router’s interface using any web browser installed on the Windows system and go to the security password or encryption key line. After viewing, enter the correct combination on the mobile device.
If you need to change the password, first do it on the router and save the changes, and then enter the changed password on your phone or tablet to connect to the network.

To view the password on a mobile device, use the connection settings, long press the Wi-Fi line to go to the settings, select a network change and check the box to display the password.
Change the encryption standard
If the mobile device again reports that an authentication error has occurred, compare the encryption types installed on the router and the mobile device.
In the parameters of the router, refer to the corresponding line and set the authentication type to WPA-PSK / WPA2-PSK (Personal), and use the AES parameter for encryption. After that, on the mobile device, use a long press on the connection name, then select the delete network in the settings. After determining the available networks, find your connection and try to reconnect.
Wi-Fi Channel Selection
If after that a notification is displayed that an authentication error has occurred, you will have to proceed to more cardinal settings that are made exclusively on the router.
Log in to the router’s web interface, as shown above, and go to the wireless settings section (if the interface is not Russified, this is usually the Wireless menu). First, make sure that the region is set correctly, and then from the drop-down list in the channel line (Chanel) alternately select one of the eleven present. Perhaps on one of them the connection will return to normal.
Change Wi-Fi mode
Finally, if this does not help, and the message that an authentication error has occurred appears again, pay attention to the set Wi-Fi mode.
To solve the problem, in the Mode selection line, set the mixed type to 11b / g or 11b / g / n with a maximum data transfer rate, for example, 300 Mbit / s.
What if nothing helps?
Now let's see what can be done if none of the proposed solutions has a positive effect. In most cases, it comes down to performing a complete reset.
First, perform such actions on the router using the appropriate section. After resetting, use the information received from the provider and set up the wireless connection again.
Then, in the settings of the wireless connection on the mobile device, delete the used connection with confirmation of the “Forget this network” item. Reboot the device and reconnect. If this does not work, reset the settings to the factory state on this device. But in most cases, such actions on a mobile device are not required. If this is still the problem, remember that personal data will be destroyed along with the rest of the information, so take care to make a backup in advance by storing it on a removable memory card or computer (for PCs, you can use even the simplest utilities like MyPhoneExplorer )
Instead of a total
These are the main reasons and methods for eliminating failures of this kind. If a similar situation is observed when trying to access open networks not at home, there is nothing left to do but contact the network administrator. At least you will definitely be given the correct password to log in. Sometimes, however, it also happens that when you visit the same institution, data access to the network on a mobile gadget is automatically saved. If something fails, the same security key may have been changed. Delete the existing connection, reconnect and enter a new password (or use the password change for the existing connection, as shown in the above material).
It remains to add that most often the router settings do not need to be changed (only in the most extreme cases), since for the most part the root cause of this problem is the banal carelessness of the owner of the phone or tablet who is trying to enter incorrect data. But with Samsung technology, a problem can really be observed, since some devices use a different type of encryption by default, which is why there is a mismatch.
