Kurumoch Samara Airport borrowed its unusual name from the village located in the neighborhood. Having begun its work in December 1957, the runway of the Kuybyshev State Airport was the most modern in the Soviet Union and was intended to receive high-speed aircraft.
History of Kurumoch Airport
Since the opening, the Kuibyshev airport has been used to train pilots to operate medium-range IL-18 and An-10 aircraft. In February 1961, the first cargo flight from Kuibyshev to Moscow was carried out. In 1992,
the Kurumoch airport in Samara received international status and commissioned an international terminal with direct flights to Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, China, Greece, and Israel.
Samara Airport today
During the perestroika period, the airport was part of Samara Airlines. In 2003, it became an independent, one-third state-owned institution. In 2011, Renova reconstructed the airport and became its new owner. Today, 99.99% of the shares of the Samara airport “Kurumoch” is owned by the Yekaterinburg airport Koltsovo. Both companies are part of the holding "Airports of the Regions."
In the crisis 2000s, passenger flow decreased to 800 thousand and only in 2010 approached 1.5 million people. The distance from Samara to Kurumoch Airport (the largest in the Volga region) is 35 km to the north, it is located 45 km east of Tolyatti.
